Greyhounds Rally in Fourth Before Falling to Elizabethtown for First Landmark Conference Setback of 2021-22

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- The Moravian University women's basketball team trailed by eight points heading into the fourth quarter before rallying to take a one-point lead with 6:34 remaining; however, host Elizabethtown College used a 12-1 run to hand the Greyhounds their first Landmark Conference loss of the 2021-22 season in a 77-64 contest Saturday afternoon.

How It Happened

  • The Blue Jays scored first and led 3-0 before senior forward Kayla Yoegel hit a jumper to put the Greyhounds on the scoreboard. The Hounds knotted the score at 5-5 on a jumper from sophomore forward Sam Osorio, and the Blue and Grey took a 9-8 lead on a jumper from junior guard Jackie Kelly at the 3:57 mark. Elizabethtown retook the lead and was up 14-11 before a three-point play from Kelly in the final minute had the squads tied at 14-14 after 10 minutes of action
  • Osorio opened the second quarter with a lay-up as Moravian moved back in front, 16-14. The Blue Jays netted six consecutive points to take a 20-16 edge; however, a pair of free throws from Kelly with 5:12 left in the half tied the game again at 20-20. Sophomore forward Sara Geary made it a 22-22 game before Elizabethtown scored four straight points for a 26-22 edge. The Greyhounds moved ahead 27-26 on a three-pointer from junior forward Emily Markowski with minute before the intermission; however, the Blue Jays hit two late free throws to head to the locker room with a 28-27 edge
  • The Blue Jays also connected on the first three baskets of the second half to open up a 34-27 lead before Markowski connected on back-to-back jumpers to get Moravian going in the third quarter and pull the Blue and Grey within 34-31. Elizabethtown slowly pulled away throughout the rest of the period by making three consecutive three-pointers and led 57-49 after 30 minutes of action
  • Kelly opened the fourth quarter with a three-pointer to make it a five-point game, and sophomore forward Gracie Hezel cut it to a three-point deficit at 59-56 with 7:29 to play. Kelly scored again as Moravian made it a one-point contest, and then the Blue and Grey retook the lead for the first time since the first quarter at 60-59 on a pair of free throws from Yoegel at the 6:34 mark. Elizabethtown answered right back to go back in front with 6:09 remaining and went on a 12-1 run to take a 71-61 advantage and hand the Greyhounds their first Landmark Conference loss of the season

Inside the Numbers

  • Moravian had two players in double figures led by Kelly, who netted a career-high 16 points and added a career-best four assists while tying her career-high with six rebounds. Markowski tossed in 11 points to go with four boards
  • Junior guard Morgan Amy tossed in nine points to go along with four rebounds and four assists while freshman guard Brielle Guarente had seven points and five boards
  • Osorio finished with six points and a trio of rebounds while Yoegel contributed five points and two boards.
  • Hezel and junior guard Ashley Robinson each had four points with Hezel grabbing a career-high eight rebounds and Robinson added three boards. Geary netted two points for the Greyhounds
  • The Hounds forced the Blue Jays into 17 turnovers while Moravian had just 11 miscues
  • Moravian shot just 30.3 percent (23-for-76) from the floor and 15.4 percent (2-for-13) beyond the three-point line while Elizabethtown shot over 45 percent from the field and over 54 percent behind the arc
