Greyhounds See Lead Slip Away in Fourth Quarter of Landmark Conference Contest with Elizabethtown

BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- The Moravian University women's basketball team led by a point at halftime and by as many as eight points before seeing the lead slip away in the fourth quarter in an 87-78 loss to visiting Elizabethtown College in Landmark Conference action in Johnston Hall Saturday.

How It Happened

  • The Blue Jays netted the game's first two points before the Greyhounds netted six straight points with a lay-up from sophomore forward Sam Osorio giving the Blue and Grey a 6-2 edge. Elizabethtown closed within a point at 8-7 before a 9-2 run had Moravian leading 17-9 after a lay-up from junior forward Emily Markowski at the 2:40 mark. Junior guard Madison Amy hit a late jumper in the opening period as the Hounds held a 21-15 edge after 10 minutes of action
  • Moravian pushed the lead out to seven points, 26-19, on a three-pointer from senior forward Kayla Yoegel early in the second quarter, and the Hounds would have a seven-point edge on three other occasions, the final time at 34-27 after a pair of free throws from junior guard Morgan Amy with 6:10 before the intermission. The Blue Jays answered with a 10-2 run to take a 37-36 advantage with 1:20 on the clock. Madison Amy connected on a three-pointer to put the Blue and Grey back ahead and a free throw from freshman forward Brielle Guarente sent Moravian to the locker room with a 40-39 lead
  • Yogel opened the scoring in the third quarter with a lay-up, and the Greyhounds pushed out to a six-point edge, 47-41, on a three-pointer from Morgan Amy. Elizabethtown closed within a point midway through the period, but the Hounds were leading 56-50 after a three-point play from Morgan Amy with 2:14 left in the quarter. The Blue Jays chipped away and cut the Moravian edge to 60-59 after 30 minutes of play
  • Elizabethtown scored first in the fourth quarter to move ahead by a point; however, a jumper from Guarente and a three-pointer by Yoegel had the Greyhounds up 65-61 with 8:37 to play. The Blue Jays went on 10-0 run to take a 71-65 lead, and Elizabethtown would hold an edge for the rest of the contest 

Inside the Numbers

  • Moravian had a balanced scoring attack with five players in double figures including Yoegel, Madison Amy and Morgan Amy all scoring 14 points. Morgan Amy also had five rebounds and four assists while Madison Amy added five assists and two rebounds and Yoegel had two boards
  • Sophomore forward Gracie Hezel tied her career-high with 12 points for the second straight contest and third time in four games, and Hezel also pulled down five rebounds
  • Osorio finished with 10 points and eight rebounds while Markowski tossed in nine points with six boards. Guarente had five points and two rebounds while junior guard Ashley Robinson contributed three rebounds and a pair of assists
  • The Greyhounds had a 36-35 edge in rebounds including 16-11 on the offensive glass, and Moravian had just nine turnovers, the first contest this season in single digits, while forcing Elizabethtown into 13 turnovers
