Greyhounds Fall to Widener on Day 1 of 18th Steel Club Classic

BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- The Moravian University women's basketball squad dropped a non-conference contest to visiting Widener University, 69-63 in Johnston Hall on Day 1 of the 18th Steel Club Classic Sunday afternoon. 

How It Happened

  • The Pride scored the opening basket, but the Greyhounds rolled off 10 consecutive points with junior guards Morgan Amy and Jackie Kelly each converting three-point plays. Widener fought back to tie the game at 10-10 before senior forward Kayla Yoegel made a bucket to regain the lead. The Pride put together a short run that gave Widener a 20-16 advantage after the first quarter
  • After a blocked shot by sophomore forward Sam Osorio, junior guard Madison Amy drained a three-pointer to cut the deficit to one point, 20-19. The squads remained within six points of each other throughout the period until Madison Amy sank a three-pointer as time expired to send Moravian and Widener into halftime tied at 36-36
  • The Pride started off the third quarter with a pair of buckets before the Greyhounds countered back to tie it at 42-42. Widener extended their lead to at most six points before the Blue and Grey got the score within one point, 50-49. Moravian found themselves trailing by three, 52-49, heading into the fourth quarter
  • Osorio made a jump shot to bring the game within one point to begin the fourth quarter, but the Pride scored six straight points to take a 58-51 edge. After back-to-back layups from Yoegel, the Hounds regained the lead with 5:45 to play at 59-58. Widener claimed the lead for good with four minutes to play and hand Moravian the loss, 69-63

Inside the Numbers

  • Moravian finished with four players in double figures with Osorio and Yoegel finishing with 12 points each. Osorio recorded her fourth double-double and second consecutive game reaching that feat, bringing down 10 rebounds, a career-high five blocked shots and one steal while Yoegel contributed six rebounds, two assists and a blocked shot
  • Kelly ended the contest with 11 points, four rebounds, two steals and a steal as Madison Amy scored 10 points with one steal, one board, and an assist
  • Morgan Amy netted eight points with a team-high seven assists, five rebounds, a blocked shot and one steal while freshman guard Brielle Guarente tossed in six points, four boards and a steal. Sophomore forward Gracie Hezel capped off the Greyhounds' scorers with four points and a rebound
  • Moravian shot 28-for-70 from the floor (40 percent)
