Hounds Connect for Three Homers but Drop Doubleheader to Neumann

BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- The Moravian College baseball team connected on three home runs but it wouldn't be enough as the Greyhounds dropped a non-conference doubleheader to visiting Neumann University, 11-6 and 13-7, on a cold and blustery day at Gillespie Field Friday.

How It Happened – Game 1

  • Neumann jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the first inning
  • Moravian would get a run back in the bottom of the first when sophomore second baseman Chris Pow connected on a two-out solo home run to center field in his first collegiate at-bat at Gillespie Field
  • The Knights added three runs in the top of the second and three more in the top of the third to extend the lead to 10-1. Neumann scored its final run in the top of the fifth frame for an 11-1 edge
  • The Greyhounds scored three times in the bottom of the sixth inning when freshman David Olsakowski ripped a three-run homer down the left field line in his first career at-bat as a college player
  • The Blue and Grey tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the seventh on RBI singles from freshman outfielder Jared Nolan and sophomore catcher Derek Holmes
  • Moravian used five pitchers in the opener with junior Eddie Olsen taking his first loss of the season with two strikeouts 

How It Happened – Game 2

  • The Knights took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning to start the scoring in the night cap
  • Moravian answered back in the bottom of the second to knot the score at 1-1 on a triple from freshman designated hitter Brett Stewart and an RBI single by senior outfielder Thomas Philipps
  • Neumann retook the lead with a six-run third inning for a 7-1 edge
  • The Hounds would get a run back in the home half of the third on an RBI sacrifice fly by senior first baseman Brett Moyer
  • The Knights tacked on three more runs in the top of the fourth to make it a 10-2 advantage
  • The Blue and Grey scored once in the fourth when graduate student infielder Ian Csencsits led of the inning with a solo home run to left center, his fourth career homer
  • Neumann scored three times in the top of the sixth to take a 13-3 lead
  • Moravian added a run on the bottom of the sixth on an RBI single from junior outfielder Robert Roman
  • The Greyhounds finished the scoring with three runs in the bottom half of the seventh. Junior third baseman David Bertolotti had an RBI single while freshman outfielder Matt Madigan added an RBI ground out and senior shortstop Michael Miceli hit an RBI single
  • The Blue and Grey sent another five pitchers to the mound in game two with sophomore Tyler Valentine taking the loss

Inside the Numbers

  • Moravian collected 21 hits over the two games with Roman, Csencsits, Moyer, Pow, Holmes and Miceli each having two hits
  • The Hounds had 21 different players make a plate appearance during the doubleheader while 10 different pitchers went to the mound
