BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- The Moravian College baseball squad dropped a pair of games to visiting The Catholic University of America, 9-5 and 7-0, at Gillespie Field Saturday afternoon to close out the 2021 regular season.
How It Happened – Game #1
- The Cardinals jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the first inning
- The Hounds answered with a run in the bottom of the first inning on an RBI single from designated hitter Derek Holmes
- Catholic added four more runs in the top of the second to stretch its lead to 8-1
- The Blue and Grey scored again in the bottom of the second frame on an RBI ground out from freshman shortstop Paul Croyle
- The Cardinals made it a 9-2 game with a run in the top of the fourth inning
- Moravian would get the run back in the bottom of the fourth when junior catcher Nick Montone hit an RBI single
- The Greyhounds added a run in the fifth inning on an RBI double by graduate student third baseman Ian Csencsits, and Moravian finished off the scoring with another run in the fifth inning on an RBI ground out from graduate student outfielder Carmine Palummo
- The Blue and Grey used a pair of pitchers in the game with junior Eddie Olsen making the start and recording four strikeouts in 1.2 innings while senior Rodney Berger had five strikeouts in 7.1 innings
How It Happened – Game #2
- The Cardinals took a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning in the second game
- Catholic added single runs in the third and fourth innings before scoring the final two runs in the top of the sixth
- The Greyhounds used three pitchers in the contest with freshman David Ciaccio making the start and posting two strikeouts in two innings. Senior Kyle Serman also had a pair of strikeouts in two innings of work while freshman Cameron Cooper struck out three batters in three innings on the hill
Inside the Numbers
- Moravian had 15 hits between the two games including 13 in the opener. Senior outfielder Thomas Philipps was 2-for-5 on the day with two runs and two doubles while Holmes went 3-for-7 with an RBI
- Palummo was 3-for-8 with a run and an RBI while Csencsits had two hits, a double and an RBI
