Moravian Holds Off Susquehanna in Opening Game of Landmark Conference Tournament Pod

BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- The fourth seeded Moravian College baseball team jumped out to an 8-0 lead and held on for a 10-7 victory over sixth seed Susquehanna University at Gillespie Field Thursday in the opening game of a Landmark Conference Tournament Pod that will finish at the University of Scranton this weekend. 

How It Happened

  • The Greyhounds jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning. Senior left fielder Thomas Philipps had an RBI single to drive in the first run, and then Philipps would make it a 2-0 lead as he trotted home on a balk
  • Moravian added three runs in the bottom of the third to extend the advantage to 5-0. Graduate student third baseman Ian Csencsits connected on a two-RBI double, and he raced home from second base on an RBI single by Philipps
  • The Blue and Grey pushed the edge to 8-0 with another three runs in the home half of the fourth frame. The first run of the inning scored on a throwing error by the River Hawks on an RBI fielder's choice by senior first baseman Brett Moyer while sophomore designated hitter Derek Holmes had an RBI single and Csencsits connected on an RBI sacrifice fly
  • Susquehanna would get on the scoreboard with a three-run homer down the left field line in the top of the fifth inning
  • The Hounds answered with a run in the bottom of the fifth for a 9-3 lead after an infield RBI single by graduate student right fielder Carmine Palummo
  • The River Hawks added a run in the top of the sixth frame to cut Moravian's lead to 9-4, and Susquehanna scored three times in the top of the eighth including a two-run homer to cut the deficit to 9-7
  • Moravian added one more run in the bottom of the eighth when Holmes raced home from third on a wild pitch
  • Junior Eddie Olsen tossed the 5.2 innings and registered five strikeouts in the game to improve to 5-2 on the mound this spring. Senior Kyle Serman pitched 3.1 innings with four strikeouts to record his fifth save of the season, the second most in a single year in program history and third in the Greyhounds' career list

Inside the Numbers

  • Moravian had 16 hits in the contest with Holmes, Philipps and Moyer each going 3-for-5 with Holmes and Moyer each scoring twice and driving in a run, and Philipps adding two RBIs and a run
  • Palummo was 2-for-5 with a run and an RBI while Csencsits had three RBIs and a double
