Greyhounds Sweep Elizabethtown at Gillespie Field to Move to Top of the Landmark Conference Standings

BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- The Moravian College baseball squad swept visiting Elizabethtown College, 5-2 and 6-5, in a Landmark Conference doubleheader at Gillespie Field Saturday afternoon as the Greyhounds extended their winning streak to seven games.

How It Happened – Game #1

  • The Greyhounds took 2-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning on an RBI single by sophomore second baseman Chris Pow and an RBI fielder's choice from sophomore designated hitter Derek Holmes that scored graduate student right fielder Carmine Palummo, who became the 16th player in program history to reach 150 career hits just before Pow's RBI single
  • The Blue Jays would knot the score at 2-2 in the top of the fifth with a two-run homer on Elizabethtown's first hit of the afternoon
  • Moravian moved back in front, 4-2, with a two-run bottom of the fifth. Senior first baseman Brett Moyer drove in both runs with a two-RBI single up the middle
  • The Greyhounds added a run in the bottom of the sixth for a 5-2 edge when junior catcher Nick Montone tripled down the right field line and scored on an RBI single from Palummo
  • Junior pitcher Eddie Olsen improved to 4-1 on the mound with the complete game win, and he struck out seven batters

How It Happened – Game #2

  • The Blue Jays jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning in the second contest
  • Moravian answered with a run in the bottom of the first on an RBI single from Moyer to cut the Elizabethtown lead to 3-1
  • The Blue Jays would push the edge back to three with a run in the top of the third for a 4-1 advantage
  • The Greyhounds scored twice in the bottom of the third to pull within a run at 4-3. Holmes had an RBI triple down the line in right field before scoring on an RBI single from Moyer
  • Elizabethtown scored a run on the top of the fifth to extend its edge to 5-3
  • Moravian pushed three runs across the plate in the bottom of the fifth to take a 6-5 lead. Pow drove in the first run with an RBI double, and Moyer picked up an RBI on a grounder that saw him reach on an error. Holmes raced across the plate with what was the winning run on a wild pitch that bounced out of play
  • Sophomore Tyler Valentine made the start on the mound for Moravian, and he had a pair of strikeouts in three innings of action. Sophomore Garrison Koch tossed two innings for his first win of the season while senior Kyle Serman pitched the final two innings for his fourth save of the spring, and Serman added four strikeouts 

Inside the Numbers

  • Moravian had 15 hits in the two contests with Palummo going 4-for-8 with four runs, an RBI and a stolen base. Moyer and Holmes were both 3-for-5 with Moyer adding five RBIs and Holmes scoring twice, driving in two runs and hitting a triple
  • Pow went 3-for-7 with a double, two runs and two RBIs as the top four batters in the Greyhounds' line-up accounted for 13 of the team's 15 hits
  • The Hounds have won seven straight, the longest streak since the 2014 season when the Blue & Grey won 12 in a row with three of the victories in that streak coming in extra innings
