Greyhounds Score 30 Runs in Landmark Conference Sweep at Drew

MADISON, N.J. --- The Moravian College baseball team scored 30 runs in a sweep of Drew University in Landmark Conference action on the road Friday afternoon, winning 15-6 and 15-1, to extend the Greyhounds' winning streak to five games.

How It Happened – Game #1

  • The Hounds took a 6-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Graduate student third baseman Ian Csencsits connected on a two-RBI double to start the scoring while junior catcher Nick Montone hit an RBI sacrifice fly. Freshman center fielder Matt Madigan cleared the bases with a three-RBI double off the top of the fence down the left field line to finish the frame
  • Moravian added a run in the top of the second on an RBI single by Csencsits to push the advantage to 7-0
  • The Blue & Grey would make it a 10-0 edge with three runs in the top of the fourth inning on two errors by the Rangers and an RBI single from graduate student right fielder Carmine Palummo
  • Drew would get on the scoreboard with three runs in the bottom of the fourth, and the Rangers added two more runs in the bottom of the fifth to cut the Hounds' lead in half to 10-5
  • Moravian responded with five runs in the top of the sixth to push the advantage back to 15-5. Sophomore designated hitter Derek Holmes ripped a two-RBI single while Csencsits followed with an RBI double. Senior left fielder Thomas Philipps added an RBI single while the Greyhounds final run of the inning came on an error
  • The Rangers finished the scoring with a run in the bottom of the sixth frame
  • Senior Rodney Berger earned his second win of the season on the mound for the Hounds as he struck out one batter in 5.2 innings. Freshman Aaron Flyte tossed the final 1.1 innings with one strikeout 

How It Happened – Game #2

  • The Greyhounds jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning of the second contest. Sophomore second baseman Chris Pow drove in the first run with an RBI double while Philipps added a two-RBI single
  • The Rangers answered with a solo home run in the bottom of the first to cut the Blue & Grey's lead to 3-1
  • Moravian added two runs in the top of the third for a 5-1 edge as Holmes scored on a wild pitch and Philipps added an RBI sacrifice fly
  • The Blue and Grey added a run in the top of the fifth when Csencsits connected on a solo home run, his second homer of the season and the fifth of his career
  • The Hounds finished the scoring with a nine-run seventh inning. Senior first baseman Brett Moyer started the scoring with an RBI single while the second run of the frame scored on an error. Freshman pinch hitter Cullen Cooper connected on an RBI single, and Madigan and Palummo each had RBI singles. Sophomore pinch hitter Mason Fisher and junior pinch hitter David Bertolotti each drew bases loaded RBI walks before Moyer connected on an RBI sacrifice fly. Csencsits drove in the final run of the game with an RBI double
  • Freshman Cameron Cooper when the distance on the mound for the Greyhounds for his first collegiate victory, and he added two strikeouts 

Inside the Numbers

  • Moravian had 28 hits in the two contests with Csencsits going 7-for-8 with six RBIs, five runs, three doubles and a homer. Palummo was 4-for-7 with four runs and two RBIs while Pow went 3-for-7 with three runs, a double and an RBI
  • Philipps also had three hits with four RBIs and three runs while Madigan had two hits, four RBIs and two runs. Moyer contributed two hits, four runs and two RBIs while Montone added two hits and an RBI
  • The Greyhounds have scored 51 runs during their five-game winning streak, and the Blue & Grey are now 7-4 on the road this spring
