Palummo Scores 100th Career Run as Greyhounds Sweep Susquehanna on the Road

SELINSGROVE, Pa. --- The Moravian College baseball team earned a Landmark Conference series victory over Susquehanna University, 3-1, after sweeping a doubleheader on the road Sunday, winning the opener 12-3 and taking the nightcap 6-4.

How It Happened – Game #1

  • The Greyhounds jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Senior first baseman Brett Moyer connected on a two-RBI single while junior catcher Nick Montone drove in a run with an RBI fielder's choice. The Blue & Grey's final run of the inning scored on an error by the River Hawks
  • The Hounds added a run in the top of the third inning on an RBI sacrifice fly from freshman shortstop Paul Croyle for a 5-0 advantage
  • Moravian tacked on two more runs in the top of the fourth to push the edge to 7-0. Sophomore designated hitter Derek Holmes had an RBI single and would score on a wild pitch
  • The Blue and Grey scored five times in the top of the seventh to take a 12-0 lead. Sophomore second baseman Mason Fisher connected on a two-RBI single while freshman center fielder Matt Madigan had an RBI single. Holmes finished of frame with a two-RBI fielder's choice
  • Susquehanna would get on the scoreboard with three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning
  • Freshman David Ciaccio improved to 2-1 on the mound as he recorded six strikeouts in 7.2 innings. Junior Leo Andreoli had two strikeouts over the final 1.1 innings on the hill

How It Happened – Game #2

  • The Hounds took a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Graduate student outfielder Carmine Palummo scored the first run on a wild pitch while Moyer had an RBI single. Moyer eventually raced home on a throwing error after another wild pitch
  • Moravian extended its advantage to 5-0 in the top of the third inning when senior outfielder Thomas Philipps connected on a two-RBI double down the right field line
  • Susquehanna got on the scoreboard with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third to cut the Greyhounds edge to 5-2, and the River Hawks added two more runs in the fourth inning to get within a run at 5-4
  • The Greyhounds would add an insurance run in the top of the sixth when graduate student third baseman Ian Csencsits reached on an error that allowed Fisher to score
  • Senior Kevin Brandt earned his first career win on the mound with two strikeouts while senior Kyle Serman picked up his third save of the season with two strikeouts

Inside the Numbers

  • Moravian scored 18 runs in the doubleheader but had just 14 hits. Moyer was 5-for-8 on the afternoon with three RBIs and a pair of doubles while Philipps was 3-for-8 with a double and two RBIs. Holmes finished with two hits, five runs and three RBIs while Fisher had a pair of RBIs
  • Palummo scored three times on the day and his second run in the opener was the 100th run of his career, making him the 15th player in program history to reach the milestone. Palummo also had two stolen bases on the afternoon to move into seventh in school history with 42 stolen bases
  • After winning three of the four games in the series, the Greyhounds jumped back into the top half of the Landmark Conference standings at 8-6 in conference play with three and a half series remaining to be completed
