Moravian Drops Landmark Conference Opener to Catholic

BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- The Moravian University field hockey team battled with The Catholic University of America in Landmark Conference action on Saturday afternoon, suffering a 3-2 loss on John Makuvek Field.

How It Happened

  • Catholic struck first, scoring in the final minute of the first quarter, to head into the second quarter, leading 1-0
  • Moravian would be held without a shot in the second quarter with the Cardinals taking five shots that went on cage, and Catholic would possess a 1-0 lead at halftime
  • The Greyhounds netted the equalizer in the 43rd minute when sophomore Hannah Leto sent a pass through the circle that junior Emily Wells would put in the cage to tie the match at 1-1.
  • Senior Ava Edwards tallied the go-ahead goal in the 53rd minutes off a penalty corner that was inserted by Wells to take a 2-1 lead
  • Catholic would retaliate with a pair of fourth-quarter goals in the 56th and 58th minutes to take a 3-2 lead
  • Moravian earned multiple penalty corners after time expired, but the Blue and Grey were unable to score, suffering a 3-2 loss in conference play

Inside the Numbers

  • Edwards reached double digits in scoring, recording her 10th goal of the season and added an assist for her fifth of the year while Wells scored her third goal of the season
  • Leto was tabbed with her first career assist
  • Junior Brooke Wilkinson made 12 saves in cages for the Greyhounds while senior Emily Brandt recorded her second defensive save of the season.
