Greyhounds Suffer 3-2 Overtime Loss to Catholic in Landmark Semifinals

BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- The top seeded Moravian University field hockey squad battled fourth seed The Catholic University of America in the Landmark Conference Semifinals on Wednesday night falling 3-2 in overtime to bring an end to their historic 2021 season.

How It Happened

  • The Greyhounds and Cardinals played a scoreless first quarter with Moravian taking the lone shot off a penalty corner
  • Catholic would score the first goal of the game in the 23rd minute to take 1-0 lead, but the Greyhounds would counter with a goal from sophomore midfielder Sarah Bietka in the 25th minute to tie the match 1-1
  • Both squads would play a scoreless third quarter with the Cardinals attempting three shots to the Hounds two
  • Moravian took the lead in the 51st minute on a penalty stroke that was taken by junior midfielder Maddie Call to give the Greyhounds a 2-1 edge. Catholic found the back of the net with just 1:12 remaining in the fourth quarter to knot the contest at 2-2 and force overtime
  • The Cardinals scored on the lone shot of overtime in the 64th minute to earn a 3-2 victory and advance to the Landmark Conference Championship

Inside the Numbers

  • Moravian appeared in its first Landmark Conference Playoff match as well as hosting its first playoff contest. The last time the Greyhounds played in the postseason was back in 1987
  • Bietka scored her sixth goal of the season as Call notched her seventh goal of the year
  • Junior Brooke Wilkinson made eight saves in net for the Greyhounds 
  • The Greyhounds finish the season with school records of 14 wins, 60 goals, 42 assists and 162 points while also posting the longest winning streak in school history at 10 matches and earning the program's first-ever NCAA Division III Regional Ranking
