Moravian Upends Scranton with a 2-1 Victory on Senior Day

BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- The Moravian University field hockey team battled The University of Scranton in Landmark Conference action on Saturday afternoon earning a 2-1 victory and handing the Royals their first loss of the season.

How It Happened

  • Prior to the start of the match, the Greyhounds honored their two graduating seniors, Emily Brandt and Ava Edwards for their careers in the field hockey program
  • The first quarter was all Scranton, who took six shots with four that were on goal and earned seven penalty corners, but the match remained scoreless after 15 minutes
  • The squads would head into halftime scoreless, but the Royals added six more shots and held the Blue and Grey without a shot in the half. Three Greyhounds made defensive saves in the second quarter, with back-to-back saves coming from junior Maddie Call and Brandt, followed by a defensive save recorded by sophomore Onalee Long after another penalty corner
  • The Greyhounds struck first on their first penalty corner of the match, with a goal coming from Long, who scored off a rebound, to give Moravian a 1-0 lead in the 38th minute
  • Moravian would tack on one more goal on another penalty corner that Edwards blasted into the net off a pass from junior Emily Wells to give the Hounds a 2-0 advantage in the 41st minute. The Blue and Grey would take a 2-0 lead into the fourth quarter
  • Scranton cut their deficit in half when they scored in the 52nd minute, but that would be all that the Royals could do as the Greyhounds gave Scranton their first loss of the year

Inside the Numbers

  • Moravian ties the program's longest win streak with their eighth consecutive victory, tying the feat that was set in 1992
  • Edwards recorded her team-leading 16th goal of the season as Long notched the first goal in her career and tallied two defensive saves in the contest
  • Wells was credited with her 12th assist of the season, which leads the team and broke the school record for assists in a season
  • Junior Brooke Wilkinson made seven saves in net for the Greyhounds while senior Brandt recorded her third defensive save of the year and Call posted her first
