BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- The Moravian University women's basketball squad rallied from an 11-point fourth quarter deficit to tie the game and have a shot at the buzzer before coming up short by a 70-68 score to visiting Susquehanna University in Landmark Conference action in Johnston Hall Saturday.
How It Happened
- The River Hawks scored the first six points of the game before senior forward Brielle Guarente put the Hounds on the scoreboard with a lay-up at the 7:19 mark. Susquehanna led 11-3 with 4:38 left in the first quarter; however, the Blue & Grey finished the period with a 9-2 run to pull within 13-12 on a lay-up from junior forward Kania Day after ten minutes of action
- Susquehanna stretch the advantage back to seven points at 21-14 just two minutes into the second quarter, and the River Hawks were up 29-24 with three minutes to play in the opening half. Moravian ran off five straight points to knot the score at 29-29 on a three-pointer from junior guard Juliana Vassallo at the 1:08 mark. Susquehanna netted the final basket of the half to take a 31-29 edge into halftime
- Guarente began the second half with a lay-up to tie the game again at 31-31. Day followed with a pair of baskets to give the Hounds a 35-31 advantage at the 8:31 mark. Moravian took a 39-33 lead on two free throws from junior guard Jayda Cartagena. The River Hawks countered with a 7-0 run to move back ahead 40-39 with 5:25 left in the quarter. Sophomore guard Lizzie Lustig put in a rebound as the Greyhounds took a 41-40 edge before Susquehanna used a 5-0 run to move up 45-41. Back-to-back three-pointers from sophomore guard Emma Altmire and Lustig pulled the Blue & Grey even at 48-48 with two minutes left in the quarter. However, the River Hawks also hit back-to-back three-pointers to rebuild the six-point lead at 54-48. Susquehanna stretched the edge to 59-50 after 30 minutes of action
- The River Hawks pushed the advantage out to 11 points early in fourth quarter. Moravian slowly closed the gap to four points at 64-60 after a three-point play from Lustig with 5:35 to play. Susquehanna made the lead seven points with a three-pointer before the Greyhounds closed within a point at 68-67 with 2:49 remaining after a jumper from sophomore forward Lanie Herbert. Lustig tied the contest a 68-68 on a free throw with 34 seconds remaining. Susquehanna connected on two free throws with four seconds to go to take a 70-68 edge. Moravian graduate student forward Sam Osorio got a shot off before the buzzer, but it bounce off the rim to end the game
- At halftime, the Greyhounds honored their 1,000-point scorers from the past in a ceremony at midcourt
Inside the Numbers
- Moravian had three players in double figures let by Lustig, who recorded her second career double-double and first of the season with a career-best 20 points and 10 rebounds to go along with two assists
- Guarente finished with 11 points to go with two assists, two steals and two boards while Day tossed in a career-high ten points to go along with eight rebounds
- Vassallo recorded eight points and a pair of assists while Osorio contributed six points and seven boards and Herbert added six points and five rebounds
- Cartagena registered four points, six rebounds and three assists while Altmire added three points and senior guard Mikayla Anderson had four rebounds and two assists
- The Hounds shot 23-for-59 from the field, 4-for-8 on three-pointers and 18-for-31 at the foul line
- The Blue & Grey held a 49-27 advantage on the boards including 15-4 on the offensive glass
