PHILADELPHIA, Pa. --- The Moravian University women's basketball team turned a nine-point halftime deficit into a 73-63 victory over Lycoming College in Landmark Conference action at the historic Palestra Sunday evening.
How It Happened
- The Greyhounds opened the scoring with a three-pointer from junior guard Juliana Vassallo before a 10-1 run from the Warriors had Lycoming on top 10-4. Sophomore guard Emma Altmire drained a three-pointer and sophomore forward Bellisima Lew had a jumper to close within 10-9 at the 2:33 mark, and the Blue & Grey knotted the score at 11-11 on a jumper from junior guard Jayda Cartagena. Cartagena had a pair of free throws to end the quarter as the squads were tied at 13-13 after ten minutes of action
- Freshman guard Sofia Squizziato began the second quarter with a jumper to give the Hounds a 15-13 edge, and Moravian led 17-15 on a tip-in from sophomore forward Lanie Herbert three minutes into the period. Lycoming went on a 9-1 run to build a 24-18 advantage, and the Warriors took a 37-28 edge to the locker room at halftime
- Lycoming still led by eight points at 39-31 two minutes into the second half when Vassallo drained her second three-pointer of the half. Sophomore guard Lizzie Lustig followed with a three-pointer, and Vassallo connected again as Moravian moved ahead 40-39 at the 6:29 mark. Lustig added a lay-up for a 42-39 edge before the Warriors countered with a 4-0 run to move back in front. Lustig and senior guard Mikayla Anderson scored for the Greyhounds while Lycoming moved ahead 47-46. Graduate student forward Sam Osorio gave the Blue & Grey the lead for good with 3:48 left in the period when she sank a jumper for a 48-47 edge. Lustig added two baskets to push the Moravian advantage to 52-47 after 30 minutes of play
- The Hounds led by at least three points throughout the entire fourth quarter, and Moravian pushed the edge to 12 points with 33 seconds left on a free throw by Squizziato for the biggest lead of the game
- Moravian was playing for the second time in three seasons as part of the Landmark Conference Day at the Palestra
Inside the Numbers
- The Greyhounds had three players in double figures led by Lustig, who tossed in a game high 19 points to go with five rebounds and three assists
- Vassallo netted 17 points with two boards and a pair of steals while Cartagena added ten points and three steals
- Osorio finished with six points, ten rebounds to move into seventh in school history with 746 career boards and two assists while Herbert grabbed a career high 14 rebounds to go along with four points, two assists, two steals and two blocked shots
- Squizziato added six points while Lew had four points and two boards
- Altmire contributed three points while Anderson had two points, two rebounds and three steals and freshman guard Emma Pukszyn posted four rebounds, four assists, two points and a pair of steals
- The Greyhounds shot 27-for-71 from the field, 7-for-19 on three-pointers ad 12-of-19 at the foul line
- The Blue & Grey held a 50-39 advantage on the boards including 20-11 on the offensive glass, and Moravian forced Lycoming into 17 turnovers
