CENTER VALLEY, Pa. --- The Moravian University women's basketball team saw a third quarter lead slip away in a 64-53 non-conference loss at DeSales University Monday.
How It Happened
- The Bulldogs netted the first three points of the game before the Hounds went on an 8-0 run to build an 8-3 advantage after two free throws from junior forward Kania Day at the 6:38 mark. Senior forward Brielle Guarente began the run. The Blue & Grey expanded the lead to 16-7 on back-to-back three-pointers from junior guard Juliana Vassallo and sophomore guard Emma Altmire. DeSales netted the last five points of the first quarter to make it 16-12 after 10 minutes of action
- DeSales also scored to begin the second quarter; however, Moravian extended the edge back to six points at 23-17 on a lay-up from junior forward Lanie Herbert at the 8:19 mark. The Bulldogs knotted the score at 23-23 before junior guard Jayda Cartagena sank a jumper to put the Blue & Grey back on top with just over five minutes left in the period. Day hit a lay-up for a four-point lead before DeSales ran off six straight points to retake a 29-27 edge. Sophomore guard Lizzie Lustig converted on three-point play with 34 seconds left in the first half to give the Greyhounds a 30-29 lead that the Hounds took to the locker room at the intermission
- Day began the third quarter with a putback to push the edge to three-points before DeSales came back to tie the game at 34-34. The Hounds retook a five-point edge on a jumper from Lustig and a three-pointer by Cartagena at the 6:26 mark. Moravian was up 41-37 after a jumper from Guarente with 5:40 left in the period. The Bulldogs countered with an 8-0 run for a 45-41 edge; however, the Blue & Grey knotted the score again at 45-45 on a basket from graduate student forward Sam Osorio with just under a minute to go in the quarter. DeSales added a late lay-up to lead 47-45 after 30 minutes of action
- The Bulldogs had an early four-point lead in the fourth quarter before a three-pointer by Cartagena pulled the Hounds within one. Guarente drained a pair of free throws to tie the game for the final time at 50-50 with 6:36 remaining. DeSales scored the next four points to take the lead for good. Lustig pulled the Greyhounds back within two points at 54-52, but the Bulldogs finished the night with a 10-1 run to finish the scoring
Inside the Numbers
- Cartagena led Moravian with 13 points to tie her career high, and she added three rebounds, two assists and a pair of steals
- Lustig contributed nine points, six boards and two assists while Guarente added nine points, three rebounds, two steals and a pair of blocked shots
- Osorio recorded eight points and seven rebounds while Day posted six points, four assists and two boards
- Altmire and Vassallo both netted three points while Herbert finished with four rebounds and two points
- The Blue & Grey shot 20-for-51 from the field, 5-for-11 on three-pointers and 8-for-9 at the foul line, and the Hounds forced the Bulldogs into 20 turnovers while committing 18 miscues
