Hounds Race Past Colonels in Landmark Conference Action

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. --- The Moravian University women's basketball squad turned a two-point first quarter lead into an 84-59 victory at Wilkes University in Landmark Conference action Wednesday evening. 

How It Happened

  • The Colonels scored the opening basket before sophomore guard/forward Lizzie Lustig hit a jumper and a lay-up to put the Greyhounds up 4-2. The Hounds pushed the edge to six points at 14-8 with two free throws from Lustig with 3:16 to play in the first quarter. The lead was still six with 1:57 on the clock on two free throws by sophomore forward Bellisima Lew, and Lew sank another free throw for a 20-18 advantage after ten minutes of action
  • Wilkes netted two free throws to start the second half before sophomore guard Emma Altmire sank a three-pointer for the Blue & Grey. The Colonels countered for a one-point lead, and the contest was tied at 26-26 when graduate student forward Sam Osorio hit a jumper to give Moravian the lead for good at 28-26 with 6:43 left in the first half. The Hounds stretched the edge to eight points at the intermission as freshman guard Ellie Wallbillich send Moravian to the locker room up 39-31
  • Lustig opened the second half with a jumper to put the lead into double digit. The Greyhounds out-scored Wilkes 27-10 in the third quarter to lead 66-41 after 30 minutes of action
  • The Blue & Grey kept the advantage over 20 points for the entire fourth quarter

Inside the Numbers

  • Moravian used a balanced scoring attack with just two players in double figures and 12 total players scoring at least two points
  • Lustig tossed in a game-high 18 points to go with eight rebounds while Osorio had a double-double with 17 points and 11 rebound
  • Freshman guard Emma Pukszyn recorded eight points, four assists and two steals while Wallbillich had seven points and six boards
  • Altmire, junior guard Jayda Cartagena and freshman guard Sofia Squizziato all scored six points with Cartagena adding four rebounds and Squizziato pulling down three boards
  • Junior guard Juliana Vassallo added five points and four assists while sophomore forward Lanie Herbert posted four points and four rebounds
  • Lew finished with three points while freshmen guards Kylie Cabana and Megan Elias both had two points
  • Senior guard Mikayla Anderson recorded four rebounds in the game
  • The Hounds shot 34-for-78 from the field, 4-for-16 on three-pointers and 12-for-18 at the foul line
  • The Blue & Grey had a 56-29 advantage on the boards including 24-7 on the offensive glass
  • Moravian forced Wilkes into 13 turnovers while committing just seven turnovers
