BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- The Moravian University women's basketball team topped Saint Elizabeth (N.J.) University, 65-56, in the opening round of the 21st Steel Club Classic in Johnston Hall Sunday afternoon.
How It Happened
- The Greyhounds scored twice in the first 21 seconds on baskets from sophomore guard Lizzie Lustig and graduate student forward Sam Osorio. The Eagles countered with a 12-1 run to build a 12-5 edge with 3:17 left in the opening quarter. Moravian answered with a 9-0 run as senior forward Brielle Guarente gave the Blue & Grey a 14-12 lead with 1:26 left in the quarter, and the Hounds led 15-14 after ten minutes of action
- Osorio began the second quarter with a lay-up to start a 9-0 run that had Moravian leading 24-10 after a jumper from junior guard Juliana Vassallo at the 6:45 mark. The Eagles netted the next six points to pull within 24-20, and Saint Elizabeth closed the gap to a point at 27-26 with 2:31 until the intermission. The Greyhounds would head to the locker room with a 31-28 edge after two free throws from freshman guard Sophia Squizziato with nine seconds left in the half
- Guarente, Osorio and Lustig all made baskets to start the third quarter as Moravian pushed the advantage to 37-28. The Blue & Grey led by at least five points throughout the period, and a three-pointer from freshman guard Ellie Wallbillich send the Hounds to a 49-37 lead after 30 minutes of play
- The Greyhounds led the entire fourth quarter with the advantage reaching 16 points at 57-41 with 5:20 to play after a lay-up from junior guard Jayda Cartagena
- Moravian improved to 34-7 all-time in the Steel Club Classic and will be looking for its 12th tournament title
Inside the Numbers
- The Greyhounds had a pair of players in double figures with Osorio posting her 18th career double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds to go with a pair of steals
- Wallbillich netted 11 points to go with five rebounds and three steals while sophomore forward Lanie Herbert had career highs of nine boards and eight points
- Sophomore guard Emma Altmire also tossed in eight points to go with a pair of assists and two rebounds while Lustig and Squizziato each finished with six points
- Vassallo and Cartagena both scored five points with Vassallo grabbing eight rebounds while Guarente finished with four points, four rebounds and four assists and senior guard Mikayla Anderson added six rebounds and four assists
- The Blue & Grey shot 22-for-70 from the field, 4-for-16 on three-pointers and 17-for-24 at the foul line, and Moravian had a 56-40 advantage in rebounds including 20-9 on the offensive glass
