Hounds Fall to No. 11 Christopher Newport in Championship Game of 21st Steel Club Classic

BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- The Moravian University women's basketball squad fell to No. 11 Christopher Newport (Va.) University, 88-63, in the championship game of the 21st Steel Club Classic in Johnston Hall Monday afternoon.

How It Happened

  • The Captains hit the opening three-pointer before two baskets from senior forward Brielle Guarente and a shot by junior guard Juliana Vassallo had the Greyhounds up 6-3. CNU scored six straight points to build a 9-6 edge when Guarente scored again to pull the Blue & Grey within a point at 9-8 with just over four minutes left in the first quarter. The Captains went on a 14-4 run to hold a 23-12 lead after ten minutes of action
  • Christopher Newport stretched the lead to 45-21 at the intermission
  • The Captains maintained the advantage throughout the second half
  • Moravian is now to 34-8 all-time in the Steel Club Classic

Inside the Numbers

  • The Greyhounds had a pair of players in double figures led by sophomore guard Lizzie Lustig, who netted a team-high 18 points to go with four rebounds as she was named to the All-Tournament Team
  • Vassallo finished with 13 points to go along with seven rebounds and a pair of assists while Guarente contributed eight points, three assists, two steals and two boards
  • Graduate student forward Sam Osorio recorded seven points, four rebounds and four steals while junior guard Jayda Cartagena and sophomore forward Bellisima Lew both had four points with Cartagena adding two assists and Lew grabbing two boards
  • Senior guard Mikayla Anderson posted six rebounds and two points while sophomore guard Emma Altmire added two points
  • Freshman guard Sofia Squizziato had two points and three assists while freshman guard Kylie Cabana had two points and freshman guard Emma Pukszyn scored one point
  • The Hounds were 24-for-61 from the field, 4-for-13 beyond the three-point line and 11-of-15 at the foul line, and Moravian had a 40-38 advantage on the boards
