BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- The Moravian University women's basketball squad scored a season-high 92 points but fell to visiting Goucher College, 105-92, in Landmark Conference action in Johnston Hall Wednesday evening.
How It Happened
- The Gophers hit the opening three-pointer of the game while graduate student forward Sam Osorio put the Greyhounds on the scoreboard to make it 3-2. The Blue & Grey took a 6-5 edge with six minutes left in the first quarter on a lay-up from sophomore guard Lizzie Lustig. Goucher ran off five straight points while the Hounds countered with a 10-3 run to take a 16-13 lead with 2:59 remaining in the opening period on a lay-up from senior forward Brielle Guarente. The Gophers answered again with a 9-0 run to move back ahead 22-16, and Goucher finished the quarter with a three-pointer in the final seconds to hold a 28-22 advantage after ten minutes of action
- Goucher began the second period with a three-pointer to push the edge to nine points, and the Gophers led by as many as 18 points at 48-30 with just over five minutes until the intermission. Moravian went on a 14-3 run to pull back within seven points at 51-44 with 3:03 on the clock after a three-point play from Lustig. However, Goucher took a 57-46 lead into the locker room
- Guarente and Osorio had baskets to start the second half to pull the Greyhounds within seven at 57-50 while the Gophers stretched the lead back to 13 points with just over four minutes left in the period. Down by 12, the Hounds netted the last six points of the third quarter with two free throws from Guarente making the deficit 80-74 after 30 minutes of play
- Freshman guard Ellie Wallbillich sank two free throws to open the scoring in the fourth quarter to get the Blue & Grey within four points at 80-76. Moravian trailed by four points two other times in the period, and the Hounds were down six, 92-86, with just over four minutes to play before the Gophers finished the contest with a 13-6 run
Inside the Numbers
- Moravian had five players in double figures including three double-doubles as Lustig netted a career-high 22 points to lead all scorers, and she added a career-best eight assists to go with five rebounds and three steals
- Junior forward Kania Day tossed in a career-high 16 points to go with a career-best 10 rebounds for her first career double-double, and she blocked a pair of shots while Osorio finished with 14 rebounds and 13 points for her first double-double of the season and 17th of her career. Osorio also had a pair of blocked shots and became the tenth player in program history to reach 700 career rebounds, now with 702
- Guarente recorded her first career double-double with 11 points and a career-high 10 rebounds to go with four assists while junior guard Juliana Vassallo tossed in 11 points to go along with four rebounds, two assists and a pair of steals
- Wallbillich netted nine points with four rebounds and three assists while junior guard Jayda Cartagena added eight points, five boards and three assists
- Senior guard Mikayla Anderson had two points while freshman guard Sofia Squizziato added a pair of assists
- The Greyhounds shot 33-for-65 from the field, 1-for-7 on three-pointers and 25-for-36 at the foul line
- The Blue & Grey held a 55-42 advantage on the boards
