Hounds Rally in Overtime to Knock Off Wilkes

BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- The Moravian University women's basketball squad trailed by five points early in overtime before rallying for a 76-71 victory over visiting Wilkes University in Landmark Conference action in Johnston Hall Wednesday evening.

How It Happened

  • The Greyhounds scored first on a jumper by graduate student forward Sam Osorio, and junior guard Juliana Vassallo made it 5-0 with a three-pointer. The Blue & Grey stretched the advantage out to nine points at 13-4 on a jumper from freshman guard Emma Pukszyn at the 2:25 mark. Moravian led 13-9 after ten minutes of action
  • Junior guard Jayda Cartagena sank a jumper to open the second period, and the Hounds were up 19-11 on a jumper from sophomore forward Lanie Herbert with just under eight minutes on the clock. The Colonels closed within a point at 23-22 before freshman guard Ellie Wallbillich drained a late three-pointer to send the Blue & Grey to the locker room with a 26-22 edge
  • Wilkes scored the first seven points of the second half to move ahead 29-26 before senior guard Mikayla Anderson hit a jumper for the Hounds. The Colonels kept the pressure on and led by eight points, 41-33, with 3:34 left in the third quarter. Moravian countered with an 11-2 run to end the period with a lay-up from freshman guard Sofia Squizziato giving the Blue & Grey a 44-43 edge after 30 minutes of play
  • The fourth quarter was played tight with six ties and six lead changes. Neither squad led by more than three points with the Greyhounds up 62-59 with seven seconds to play after a pair of free throws by Pukszyn. However, Wilkes sank a three-pointer with 3.1 seconds left to send the game to overtime tied at 62-62
  • The Colonels opened the extra session with five straight points to take a 67-62 edge. Moravian answered back with a 6-0 run as two free throws by Osorio at the 1:40 mark had the Hounds move back ahead 68-67. Wilkes hit a free throw to tie the game before a three-point play by Cartagena put the Greyhounds in the lead for good with 1:09 on the clock. In the final 21 seconds of action, Herbert added a jumper and a free throw and Pukszyn sank two more free throws to seal the victory

Inside the Numbers

  • Moravian had four players in double figures led by Osorio, who had 19 points and 12 rebounds for her 19th career double-double, and Osorio had two assists, two steals and three blocked shots as she became the ninth player in program history to reach 100 career blocks, now with 102
  • Pukszyn tossed in a career-high 14 points to go with four rebounds, four assists and three steals while Herbert had her first career double-doubles with 11 points and 12 rebounds to go with two blocked shots
  • Wallbillich netted 11 points to go with three boards while Cartagena finished with eight points, four rebounds and three assists
  • Vassallo registered five points and four rebounds while Squizziato had four points, five assists and a pair of boards
  • Sophomore forward Bellisima Lew recorded two points and three rebounds while Anderson contributed four rebounds, two assists and two points
  • The Hounds shot 29-for-73 from the field, 4-for-20 on three-pointers and 14-for-21 at the foul line including 14-for-16 after missing their first five free throw attempts of the contest
  • The Blue & Grey held a 52-39 advantage on the boards including 18-10 on the offensive glass
