BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- The Moravian University baseball squad rallied from a two-run deficit in the ninth inning to post a 7-6 walk-off victory over visiting New Jersey City University in non-conference action at Gillespie Field Thursday afternoon as the Greyhounds opened their 2022 home season.

How It Happened

  • The Gothic Knights opened the scoring with a run in the top of the third inning
  • The Hounds answered with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the third to take a 2-1 edge. Junior second baseman Chris Pow connected on a two-out double to right center, and junior catcher Derek Holmes followed with a two-run homer to left center, Holmes' third home run of the season
  • NJCU answered back with a run in the top of the fourth to knot the score at 2-2
  • Moravian moved back ahead, 3-2, with a run in the sixth frame as senior outfielder Robert Roman led off with a single and raced home from second base on an RBI single to left field off of Pow's bat
  • The Gothic Knights retook the lead with a three-run homer in the top of the seventh inning to hold a 5-3 edge
  • The Blue and Grey pulled within a run in the bottom of the eighth inning as Roman ripped an RBI single to left field to bring in sophomore pinch hitter Connor Wengryn, who had started the frame with a double
  • New Jersey City extended its advantage to 6-4 with a run in the top of the ninth as daylight began to fall
  • Moravian would counter with three runs in the bottom of the inning to earn the walk-off victory. Pow started this off with a single up the middle, and Holmes followed with a single up the middle as well. Graduate student first baseman Brett Moyer laced a two-RBI double to the fence in right center and Pow and Holmes raced across the plate to tie the game. Sophomore Patrick Benolken came in to pinch run for Moyer and moved to third on a ground out by sophomore outfielder David Olsakowski. Wengryn came to the plate and hit a ground ball to third base that was misplayed and rolled away from the fielder to let Benolken scamper across the plate with the winning run

Inside the Numbers

  • Moravian had 12 hits in the game with Pow and Roman each going 3-for-4 with Pow adding two runs, an RBI and a double and Roman contributing an RBI and scoring once
  • Holmes went 2-for-4 with two runs, two RBIs and his homer, the fourth round-tripper of his career. Moyer added a double and two RBIs while Wengryn had a double, a run and an RBI and sophomore outfielder Matt Madigan hit a double
  • The Hounds sent five pitchers to the mound with junior Tyler Valentine making the start and recording four strikeouts in five innings of action. Junior Andrew Connallon added one strikeout in an inning-plus of work while junior Kenny Kunzman, graduate student Kevin Brandt and junior Garrison Koch all pitched one inning with Koch earning the victory to improve to 3-0 on the year
