Greyhounds Post Landmark Conference Split at Elizabethtown

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- The Moravian University baseball squad split a Landmark Conference doubleheader at Elizabethtown College Saturday afternoon, falling 9-3 in the opener before winning the nightcap 9-5. 

How It Happened – Game #1

  • The Blue Jays jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning, and Elizabethtown stretched the advantage to 5-0 with a three-run fourth inning
  • The Greyhounds would get on the scoreboard with a run in the top of the sixth inning when sophomore outfielder Matt Madigan led off with a single and raced around the bases on an RBI double down the right field line by junior designated hitter Derek Holmes
  • The Blue Jays would plate a run in the bottom of the sixth to make the lead 6-1
  • Moravian scored again in the seventh inning with one run. Senior catcher Nick Montone doubled with one out and senior Elias Engelhardt came in to pinch run. Engelhardt crossed the plate on an RBI single from Madigan
  • The Blue and Grey cut the deficit to 6-3 with a single run in the top of the eighth when graduate student Brett Moyer led off with a single and eventually scored on an RBI single by sophomore catcher Connor Wengryn
  • Elizabethtown added three insurance runs in the bottom half of the eighth inning to finish the scoring in the opener
  • Senior Eddie Olsen made the start on the mound for the Greyhounds, and he had four strikeouts in five-plus innings of action. Junior Garrison Koch tossed 2.1 innings with a strikeout while senior Kyle Petsch pitched the final two-thirds of an inning 

How It Happened – Game #2

  • The Blue Jays once again took an early lead in game two with three runs in the bottom of the first inning
  • Moravian answered with a run in the top of the second when junior second baseman Chris Pow led off with a single and raced across the plate from third on an RBI fielder's choice from sophomore outfielder David Olsakowski
  • The Greyhounds tied the contest at 3-3 with a pair of runs in the top of the third. Madigan and Holmes had singles to get things going, and junior shortstop Mason Fisher hit a single to load the bases with one out. Pow followed with a two-RBI single as Madigan and Holmes raced home
  • Elizabethtown scored a run in the bottom of the third to go back ahead 4-3
  • The Hounds took the lead for good with a four-run fifth inning. Fisher drew a leadoff walk, and Pow singled. After an out, Montone was hit by a pitch to load the bases for Olsakowski, who hit an infield RBI single to score Fisher. Madigan then emptied the bases with a three-RBI double down the left field line
  • The Blue Jays scored their final run of the day in the bottom of the seventh
  • Moravian added two more insurance runs in the top of the eighth. Moyer and Fisher walked early in the inning before Pow reached on a fielder's choice to load the bases. Sophomore pinch hitter Cole Cherkas delivered a two-RBI single as Fisher and Moyer scored
  • Sophomore Aaron Flyte made the start on the mound for the Blue and Grey, and he tossed the first 3.2 innings. Junior Tyler Valentine had a pair of strikeouts in 2.2 innings while graduate student Kevin Brandt pitched two-thirds of an inning. Junior Noah Ingalls and freshman Matt Snyder both tossed an inning with Snyder recording one strikeout

Inside the Numbers

  • Moravian had 23 hits in the doubleheader with Holmes going 4-for-8 with a pair of doubles, a run and an RBI. Madigan also had four hits to go along with four RBIs, two runs and a double while Pow collected three hits with two RBIs and two runs
  • Montone was 3-for-6 on the day with a run while Moyer, Fisher and Olsakowski each had two hits with Moyer and Fisher both crossing the plate twice
  • Cherkas and Olsakowski each collected two RBIs
