Hounds Open Landmark Conference Series Versus Drew with Victory

BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- The Moravian University baseball squad began its Landmark Conference series with Drew University at Gillespie Field with a 16-6 victory Friday afternoon.

How It Happened

  • The Greyhounds jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Senior outfielder Robert Roman and junior shortstop Mason Fisher started the game with singles, and both players raced home on a two-RBI single by junior second baseman Chris Pow
  • The Rangers scored three times in the top of the second to move in front 3-2
  • The Blue and Grey answered with five runs in the bottom half of the second frame to take the lead for good at 7-3. Sophomore catcher Connor Wengryn and sophomore outfielder Matt Madigan singled with one out before Wengryn came across the plate on an RBI single from Roman. Junior designated hitter Derek Holmes connected on a two-RBI double to bring in Madigan and Roman, and Holmes trotted across the plate on an RBI fielder's choice by graduate student Brett Moyer. Fisher also scored on the play on a throwing error
  • Drew plated three runs in the top of the third to make it a 7-6 game
  • Moravian countered again in the bottom of the third with four more runs. Wengryn and Madigan drew walks and Roman was hit by a pitch to load the bases for Fisher, who ripped a three-RBI triple down the right field line. Fisher eventually scored on an RBI single from Holmes to make it 11-6
  • The Hounds tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the fourth for a 13-6 edge. Wengryn and Madigan had singles to get things going before Wengryn scampered across the plate on a throwing error, and Madigan scored on an RBI single from Fisher
  • Moravian finished the scoring with three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Roman drew a walk and ended up on third after a single from Fisher. Holmes ripped another RBI single to score Roman while Moyer brought in Fisher with an RBI single. Holmes raced home with the final run of the game on an RBI fielder's choice from Pow

Inside the Numbers

  • Moravian had 18 hits in the game with Fisher going 4-for-5 with four RBIs, four runs and a triple. Holmes was 3-for-4 with four RBIs, a double and two runs while Wengryn posted a 3-for-4 game with three runs
  • Roman was 2-for-4 on the afternoon with four runs and an RBI while Madigan had a 2-for-4 game with three runs and Moyer added two RBIs
  • Freshman Matt Snyder made the start on the mound for the Blue and Grey, and he struck out one batter in three innings of work. Junior Garrison Koch tossed two innings of relief to earn the win and improve to 4-0 on the season while junior Andrew Connallon struck out six batters in four innings of action
