Holmes Named to CoSIDA NCAA Division III Baseball Academic All-America Second Team

BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- Junior designated hitter/catcher Derek Holmes of the Moravian University baseball squad has been named to the 2022 College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-America Baseball Second Team for NCAA Division III schools.

To be eligible for CoSIDA Academic All-America® honors, a student-athlete must maintain at least a 3.30 grade-point average, be a sophomore, junior or senior and be a starter or significant reserve. Holmes was a member of the Academic All-District IV in NCAA Division III is made up of schools from Pennsylvania to make the national ballot. Holmes becomes the 56th Greyhound to be named a CoSIDA Academic All-American®, and he is one of two student-athletes from the Landmark Conference on Academic All-America Teams.

Holmes, who earned spots on both the American Baseball Coaches Association and D3baseball.com All-Region 5 First Teams as a catcher, set the Moravian single season hit record this past spring with 69 hits and also set the school mark for single season batting average at .460. He contributed 98 total bases, 37 RBIs, 34 runs, 15 doubles, a triple and four home runs in 150 at-bats, and Holmes also had 14 walks, eight hit-by-pitch, four stolen bases, a .529 on-base percentage and a .653 slugging percentage while playing all 40 games with 38 starts for the Hounds with 20 games as a designated hitter, 19 as a catcher and one as a pinch hitter, who were 22-18 on the year. Holmes added 93 putouts and 19 assists as a catcher with 11 runners caught stealing before an injury relegated him to the designated hitter position.

Holmes, who was named to the Landmark All-Conference First Team in both 2022 and 2021, became the 38th player in program history to reach 100 career hits, and he has 102 hits, 56 RBIs, 53 runs, 18 doubles, two triples and five home runs in 254 at-bats over 74 career games with one season remaining.

Off the diamond, Holmes has a 3.85 GPA as an accounting major and mathematics minor. He has been named to Moravian's Dean's Honors List six times during his collegiate career, and he is a two-time member of the Landmark Conference Spring Academic Honor Roll and Moravian's Chi Alpha Sigma National College Athlete Honor Society.

Holmes is the third member of Moravian's baseball program to be named a CoSIDA Academic All-American®, joining Brendan Close and Austin Rock, who both earned the honor in 2012. Rock was a First Team honoree as a designated hitter while Close made the Second Team as a pitcher.
