CENTER VALLEY, Pa. --- The Moravian University baseball squad battled back to earn a non-conference victory over DeSales University, 6-5, in 11 innings on Wednesday evening, including graduate student first baseman Brett Moyer garnering his 100th career hit as a member of the Greyhounds.

How It Happened

  • After a couple of walks to lead off the contest, junior designated hitter Derek Holmes drove in the first run of the game with an RBI single to center field. Moyer followed with a single to right field for an RBI for his 100th career hit in a Moravian uniform to give the Hounds a 2-0 lead
  • DeSales countered with a three-run bottom of the first to take a 3-2 advantage
  • The Blue and Grey tied the ball game in their half of the fourth when sophomore outfielder Matt Madigan singled to third base to score senior third baseman David Bertolotti to knot the game at 3-3
  • The Bulldogs took the lead back in the bottom of the fourth frame with a pair of runs to have a 5-3 edge after four innings
  • Moravian got one run across in the seventh off of a pinch-hit RBI double from sophomore Cole Cherkas that plated Moyer to put the Hounds within a run at 5-4
  • In the eighth frame, the Greyhounds would tie the game on a sacrifice fly to center field from Moyer that brought freshman Nick Henry racing home to tie things up at 5-5
  • Moravian scored the go-ahead run in the top of the 11th inning after junior second baseman Chris Pow led off the frame with a single into left field and advanced to second base on a failed pick-off attempt. Freshman third baseman Ayden Dunbar doubled down the left-field line to plate Pow, which would end up being the game-winning run

Inside the Numbers

  • The Greyhounds posted 12 hits on the night with DeSales only recording seven
  • Two different Hounds recorded multi-hit performances in the game with Pow going 3-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored while Madigan turned in a 2-for-5 game with two stolen bases, a run scored and an RBI.
  • Seven other Hounds produced a hit in the game and four of them also had an RBI. Moyer's lone hit on the night was all he needed to earn his 100th career hit donning a Greyhound uniform, becoming the 37th member of the baseball program to reach the milestone
  • Dunbar hit for a double that drove in the game-winning run while Cherkas reached base with a double and plated one run. Henry earned a hit and also drew a walk and stole a base. Holmes and junior Mason Fisher both had base knocks with Holmes plating one run and stealing a base while Fisher scored once. Sophomore Connor Wengryn had a hit and was walked once on the night
  • Junior Noah Ingalls got the start on the mound for the Hounds and threw three innings, allowing three hits, three earned runs, one walk and a strikeout. Junior Andrew Connallon was the first to enter in relief and pitched 1.1 innings and gave up three hits, and two earned runs while sophomore David Ciaccio threw 0.2 of an inning and did not give up a hit in the three batters he faced.
  • Sophomore Aaron Flyte entered the game in the fifth inning and hurled six innings and allowed just one hit with three strikeouts to earn his second victory of the year
