Hounds Fall to Catholic in Landmark Conference Series Opener

BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- The Moravian University baseball squad fell to visiting The Catholic University of America, 10-6, in the opening game of a Landmark Conference series at Gillespie Field Saturday afternoon.

How It Happened

  • The day started with the scheduled doubleheader being switched to a single game due to rain continuing throughout the morning. The twinbill was moved to Sunday at Gillespie Field
  • The Cardinals opened the scoring with a run in the top of the first inning, and Catholic added six runs in the top of the second for a 7-0 edge. The Cardinals made it an 8-0 contest with a run in the fourth
  • The Greyhounds would get onto the scoreboard in the bottom of the sixth with two runs. Sophomore catcher Connor Wengryn led off the frame with a single and sophomore outfielder Matt Madigan reached on an error. Senior outfielder Robert Roman connected on an RBI single to chase Wengryn across the plate, and Madigan raced home from second base on an error in the outfield on the play
  • Catholic scored its final two runs of the day in the top of the eighth inning to make the advantage 10-2
  • The Blue and Grey answered with two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning. Once again, Wengryn started things off with a single and Madigan followed with a double. Roman ripped an RBI single down the left field line to bring in Wengryn. Junior second baseman Chris Pow drove in Madigan with an RBI single
  • Moravian plated two more runs in the bottom of the ninth and had the tying run at the plate when the game ended. Sophomore pinch hitter Paul Croyle hit a one-out triple and scored on an RBI ground out from sophomore pinch hitter Cole Cherkas. Wengryn reached on another base hit and raced across the plate on an infield RBI single from Roman 

Inside the Numbers

  • Moravian had 14 hits in the game with Wengryn going 3-for-4 with three runs while Roman was 3-for-5 with three RBIs
  •  Madigan and junior shortstop Mason Fisher were both 2-for-4 with Madigan scoring twice and adding a double
  • Junior Noah Ingalls made the start on the mound for the Blue and Grey, and he tossed 1.1 innings. Junior Tyler Valentine recorded five strikeouts in 6.2 innings of action while sophomore Aaron Flyte struck out the side in the top of the ninth in his only inning of work
