Hounds Earn Pair of Wins Over Albright

BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- The Moravian University baseball squad earned a pair of non-conference victories over Albright College, a 3-2-win in a seven-inning contest and a 7-6 walk-off victory in game two, on Saturday afternoon at Gillespie Field.

How It Happened – Game 1

  • After two scoreless frames, the Lions were the first to score on a single through the right side to take a 1-0 lead
  • In the bottom of the fourth inning, Moravian would jump in front 2-1 after freshman infielder Ayden Dunbar doubled into left-center field two score two runners before being thrown out at third base
  • Albright would tie the ball game at 2-2 in the top of the fifth on an RBI double to left-center field, but the Greyhounds would plate what would be the game-winning run in the bottom of the fifth when senior outfielder Robert Roman singled through the right side for an RBI and give Moravian a 3-2 advantage
  • Freshman Matt Snyder got the start on the mound for the Hounds and threw four innings, allowing two hits, one earned run, one walk and seven strikeouts. Junior Andrew Connallon was the first to enter in relief and threw one inning and gave up one hit, an earned run and one strikeout while junior Kenny Kunzman followed with one inning of work and had one walk, a strikeout and allowed one hit. Graduate student Kevin Brandt threw the final frame and gave up only one hit, one walk and a strikeout while earning the save. Connallon earned his first victory of the year

How It Happened – Game 2

  • Moravian struck first in the bottom of the first when senior first baseman Brett Moyer singled to right field for an RBI and gave the Hounds a 1-0 lead
  • Moyer then blasted a two-run homer to center field to extend the Greyhounds' advantage to 3-0 through three innings, his first home run of the season
  • In the fourth frame, the Blue and Grey tacked on two more runs to take a 5-0 lead. Junior second baseman Chris Pow earned an RBI when he grounded out to second and junior catcher Derek Holmes reached base on a throwing error that allowed sophomore outfielder Matt Madigan to cross the plate
  • Moravian made it 6-0 in the sixth inning when sophomore Cole Cherkas recorded an RBI single up the middle that scored sophomore shortstop Mason Fisher
  • It would take Albright until the seventh inning to score their first run of game two, but they followed a lone run in the seventh with a five-run eighth inning to tie the contest at 6-6 after eight innings
  • Moravian loaded the bases in the bottom of the ninth and Pow drew a walk, which earned him an RBI and sent sophomore Paul Croyle trotting home for the game-winning run
  • Junior Tyler Valentine earned the start in game two, where he allowed just two hits and had one walk in four innings of work. Senior Kyle Petsch tossed one frame and had just one hit as senior Leo Andreoli threw two innings and allowed one earned run on two hits. Sophomore Rony Minier threw 0.1 inning and gave up four earned runs on three hits and walked one batter before sophomore Aaron Flyte enter the game and tossed 0.2 inning with a strikeout, one walk, two hits allowed and one earned run. Brandt took the mound in the ninth and delivered one inning of work and gave up only one hit and earned his second win of the season

Inside the Numbers

  • The Greyhounds posted 17 hits on the day with 10 hits in game two and outhit the Lions 17-16
  • Three different Hounds recorded multi-hit performances on the day with Roman going 4-for-7 with an RBI.  Moyer went 2-for-7 with a home run, three RBIs, two runs scored and a walk while Fisher finished 2-for-6 with three runs scored and two walks.
  • Nine other Greyhounds recorded a base hit on the day with Holmes scoring a run and earning a walk and Madigan scored twice and was walked two times. Dunbar hit for a double that drove in a pair of runners while Cherkas recorded a hit and plated one run. Freshman Nick Henry earned a hit and also drew a walk while junior Matt Ciarrocchi reached base safely. Croyle recorded a double and was walked once and both sophomores David Olsakowski and Connor Wengryn each had a hit and Olsakowski also earned a walk
