Moravian Names Douglas Coe as Head Baseball Coach

Douglas Coe named Head Baseball Coach.

BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- Moravian University has named SUNY Cortland Assistant Coach Douglas Coe as Head Baseball Coach, just the program's sixth head coach since 1935. Coe will begin his duties on July 18 with the Greyhounds.

"It is with great pleasure that I welcome Douglas Coe to our Athletic Department family as the new Baseball Coach," stated Director of Athletics and Recreation, Mary Beth Spirk. "After an extensive national search, Doug rose above a highly competitive pool. Doug is a proven winner as a player and a coach."

Coe arrives in Bethlehem after two seasons as Assistant Head Coach/Recruiting Coordinator at SUNY Cortland where he helped the Red Dragons to a pair of trips to the NCAA Division III Regionals. Coe also spent three seasons on the staff at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, his alma mater, and his other coaching experience includes four seasons as an assistant coach at Lawrence (Wisc.) University and two seasons as Head Coach at Notre Dame Academy in Green Bay. During the summer of 2019, Coe coached with the Gary Southshore RailCats in the American Association.

"This a very exciting opportunity for me and my family to lead the Moravian Baseball program as the head baseball coach," stated Coe. "Obviously, it is a dream as a coach to be able to lead a program and be a role model to your student-athletes day in and day out. I am very humbled that Coach Spirk and the staff at Moravian trust me to lead the baseball program into the future. I'm excited to get started and work with not only the baseball student-athletes but all the faculty, staff, leadership, and community to provide a team that we are all proud of on and off the field."

As a student-athlete at Wisconsin-Stevens Point, Coe helped the program to a fifth-place finish at the 2006 NCAA Division III World Series, a third-place showing in 2007 and a trip to the NCAA Regionals in 2008. As a senior in 2008, Coe, a catcher, was named the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Position Player of the Year, a First Team All-American by the American Baseball Coaches Association and a Second Team All-American by D3baseball.com. He was also selected to the Wisconsin-Stevens Point Hall of Fame in 2018.

"I want to thank Coach Spirk and the staff at Moravian for this opportunity to lead the Greyhound baseball program into the future," Coe said. "Equally, I want to thank my family, specifically my wife Marcy and daughter Kinsley for their constant support to follow my dreams in the baseball world. I also want to thank Coach Brown for giving me a chance to grow as a baseball coach and preparing me for this next chapter as the head baseball coach here at Moravian."

Coe graduated from Wisconsin-Stevens Point in 2009 with a bachelor's degree in elementary education and coaching, and he earned a Master's degree in athletic administration from Ohio University in 2017.

"We are looking forward to having Douglas continue the winning tradition in our baseball program," continued Spirk. "His knowledge of the game, his ability to motivate student-athletes and his understanding of success on and off the field, all serve to make him the right person for the job. We all look forward to welcoming Doug and his family to the Moravian community."

Coe takes over a Moravian program that was 22-18 during the 2022 campaign, and the Greyhounds have a 1,113-927-10 all-time record in 87 seasons.

"What excites me about the Moravian baseball program is the opportunity to lead the young men that are currently here and have the chance to meet our large and passionate baseball alumni that dates back to 1935," commented Coe. "Another aspect that is exciting for me is coming into the Moravian community that supports their student-athletes in a way that is second to none. Learning about the support that is given to athletics from our President, Dr. Grigsby and all the faculty and staff at Moravian University is exciting to now be a part of. I can't wait to get on Gillespie Field with the baseball team and get to work.

"My goals are to create an environment of constant competition that builds on the program's previous success. I believe that we have a strong base that is ready to compete not just within our conference but at the Regional and National level," Coe finished.
