Women's Tennis Opens 2012-13 with 6-3 Win over Misericordia

BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- The Moravian College women's tennis team opened its 2012-13 season with a 6-3 victory over Misericordia University in the opening contest of a Tri-Match at Hoffman Courts Saturday.

In the middle match, Gwynedd-Mercy College defeated Misericordia, 6-3, and the final match between the Greyhounds and the Griffins was postponed when lightning and heavy rain moved in as the teams were finishing their doubles warm-up to start the match. The contest has not been rescheduled at this time.

Against the Cougars, Moravian had a 2-1 lead after doubles action when junior Olivia Sonnabend and sophomore Melissa Follett posted an 8-1 win at second doubles and freshmen Brittany Hodge and Courtnie Lambert had a 9-8 (10-8) victory at third doubles.

The Greyhounds would wins four of six singles matches to start the year with a 1-0 record.  Senior Chelsea Ott won 8-0 at first singles for her 51st career victory while junior Erica Venuti had an 8-6 win at third singles.  Hodge posted an 8-5 triumph at fourth singles while Sonnabend had an 8-1 win at sixth singles.

Moravian is scheduled to return to action on Thursday, September 13th when the squad hosts rival Muhlenberg College in a non-conference contest beginning at 4:00 p.m. at Hoffman Courts.
