Women's Tennis Opens Spring with 9-0 Sweep of Virginia Union

RICHMOND, Va. --- The Moravian College women's tennis team opened the spring portion of its 2012-13 season with a 9-0 sweep of NCAA Division II Virginia Union University Sunday.

The Greyhounds opened the match by winning all three doubles matches. Sophomore Melissa Follett and junior Erica Venuti earned an 8-4 win at first doubles while juniors Olivia Sonnabend and Katie Zien posted an 8-3 victory at second doubles. Freshmen Brittany Hodge and Courtnie Lambert combined for an 8-1 win at third doubles.

Moravian also swept the six singles matches in straight sets. Follett needed a tiebreaker in her first set for the victory at first singles while Zien won at second singles in her first match of the year after studying abroad during the fall portion of the season. Venuti won at third singles while Hodge captured the victory at fourth singles. Rounding out the line-up for the Greyhounds were Lambert winning at fifth singles and Sonnabend capturing a victory at sixth singles.

The Greyhounds are slated to return to action on Monday, March 4th in a non-conference match at Randolph-Macon College in Ashland, Virginia.
