Women's Tennis Falls to Goucher, 5-4, in Landmark Action

BALTIMORE, Md. --- The Moravian College women's tennis team opened the 2013 Landmark Conference season with a 5-4 loss to Goucher College in a seven-plus hour match played indoors at the Bare Hill Racquet & Fitness Center in Baltimore due to inclement weather.

The Greyhounds led the match, which started at 5:00 p.m. and ended after midnight, 2-1 after the doubles action. The team of sophomore Melissa Follett and junior Erica Venuti earned a 9-8 (10-8) win at first doubles for Moravian while the squad of juniors Olivia Sonnabend and Katie Zien posted an 8-6 victory at second doubles.

In singles action, Follett had a straight sets win at first singles while freshman Courtnie Lambert won in three sets at fifth singles. The Gophers had straight sets wins at third and sixth singles while Moravian freshman Brittany Hodge forced three sets at fourth singles before falling and seeing the match tied up at 4-4.

The contest came down to the second singles match between Zien and Meaghan Lee of Goucher. Lee won the first set in a tiebreaker, 7-6 (7-2), while Zien captured the second set, 7-5. The third set ended up going to a tiebreaker as well with Lee earning the win, 7-6 (8-6).

Moravian is scheduled to return to action on Saturday, March 23rd when the Greyhounds host The Catholic University of America in a Landmark Conference match beginning at 1:00 p.m. at Hoffman Courts.
