Women's Tennis Tops Drew, 8-1, in Season Finale

MADISON, N.J. --- The Moravian College women's tennis team defeated Drew University, 8-1, in Landmark Conference action in the final match of the 2012-13 regular season.

The Greyhounds swept the doubles action for a 3-0 lead. Junior Erica Venuti and sophomore Melissa Follett won at first doubles while junior Katie Zien and freshman Brittany Hodge picked up a victory at second doubles. Junior Olivia Sonnabend and freshman Courtnie Lambert won at third doubles.

Moravian then won five of six singles matches for the victory. Zien had a straight sets win at second singles while Venuti won in two sets at third singles. Hodge also won in straight sets at fourth singles while Lambert posted a three-set victory at fifth singles. Sonnabend had a two-set win at sixth singles.

The Greyhounds finish the regular season at 10-3 overall and 3-3 in Landmark Conference action. During the season, Moravian had four matches and two scrimmages cancelled due to weather.

Moravian finished in a tie with Juniata College at 3-3 for fourth place in the conference standings. According to the Landmark Conference tiebreaking criteria, Juniata's head-to-head win over Moravian breaks the tie and the Greyhounds missed the playoffs but just two points with 5-4 losses to both Juniata and third seed The University of Scranton.

For the first time in 19 seasons, the Greyhounds will not be in the conference tournament to end the season after a string of 18 straight postseason berths that finished with 11 conference championships, 17 conference championship match appearances and two NCAA Division III Tournament berths.

Moravian returns its entire roster for 2013-14 and the coaching staff has a strong recruiting class that will help the Greyhounds challenge for a playoff berth next season.
