Greyhounds Clinch Berth in Landmark Conference Tournament with Victory at Scranton

SCRANTON, Pa. --- The Moravian University women's tennis team clinched a berth in the 2023 Landmark Conference Tournament with a 6-3 win Saturday at the Birchwood Racquet Club. 

How It Happened

  • The Royals took a 2-1 lead in doubles action to open the contest with the Greyhounds earning an 8-2 victory at second doubles from the tandem of seniors Maddie Figiel and Cristina Merone for a 1-0 edge. Scranton then posted an 8-5 win at first doubles and an 8-6 triumph at third doubles to take the lead heading into singles play
  • Scranton stretched the advantage to 3-1 with a win at first singles before the Hounds took the remaining five singles contests for the team victory. Freshman Izzy Szmodis began the run with a 6-0, 6-1 triumph at third singles while Figiel evened the contest with a 6-4, 6-2 win at second singles. Merone put the Blue & Grey into the lead for go with a 6-3, 6-2 victory at fourth singles while junior Mara Stapleton earned the winning team point with 6-4, 6-4 triumph at fifth singles. Sophomore Rose Lombardo finished off the afternoon with a 6-1, 6-2 win at sixth singles
  • Moravian, which has won six straight matches, will be playing in the Landmark Conference tournament for the fifth straight season with the squad winning conference titles in both 2021 and 2019
