Greyhounds Close Out Regular Season with Shutout over Catholic

BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- The Moravian University women's tennis team closed out the 2022-23 regular season with a 7-0 victory over visiting The Catholic University of America on Landmark Conference action Saturday at Hoffman Courts and Liberty High School.

How It Happened

  • The Greyhounds opened the match by sweeping the doubles action. The duo of senior Julianne Cassady and freshman Izzy Szmodis began the afternoon with an 8-0 win at first doubles. Seniors Maddie Figiel and Cristina Merone recorded an 8-3 triumph at second doubles while junior Mara Stapleton and sophomore Rose Lombardo completed the sweep with an 8-4 victory at third doubles
  • In an effort to finish both the men's and women's contests before the afternoon storms, the women moved to Liberty High School for the singles contests. Merone completed her fourth singles match first with a 6-2, 6-1 win while Figiel earned the winning team point with a 6-1, 6-0 triumph at second singles. Szmodis made in 6-0 with a 6-0, 6-2 victory at third singles while Cassady recorded a 6-1, 6-3 win a first singles
  • The final two singles matches were in the first set when a lightning delay began. With the men's contest finished and the women's match decided, the final two singles contests were left unfinished
  • Moravian, which has won eight straight matches, will be the second seed in the upcoming Landmark Conference Tournament and host Goucher College in a semifinal match next week
