Houghton & Mastro Honored on CoSIDA Men’s Track/Cross Country Academic All-District IV Team

BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- Graduate student Shane Mastro and senior Shane Houghton of the Moravian University men’s cross country and track & field teams have been honored on the 2022 College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-District Men’s Track/Cross Country Team for NCAA Division III schools in District IV.

To be eligible for CoSIDA Academic All-America® honors, a student-athlete must maintain at least a 3.30 grade-point average, be a sophomore, junior or senior and be a starter or significant reserve. District IV in NCAA Division III is made up of schools from Pennsylvania. Moravian has had 55 Greyhounds named CoSIDA Academic All-Americans®.

By making the All-District First Team, Mastro and Houghton are now forwarded onto the national ballot to try for CoSIDA Academic All-America® accolades, which will be announced Wednesday, June 22. The duo are the only student-athletes from the Landmark Conference on Academic All-District Teams.

Mastro won the 2022 Landmark Conference Outdoor titles in the shot put and discus while finishing as the runner-up in the hammer throw for All-Conference Second Team honors in the event in 2022. In his career, Mastro is an eight-time Landmark Conference Champion, winning the shot put seven times including three outdoor titles and four indoor championships to go along with his discus title in 2022. He has also earned four Landmark All-Conference Second Team honors including twice in the hammer throw and once each in the discus and 35-pound weight throw, and Mastro is also a four-time bronze medalist at the Landmark Conference meets. He set the school record in the shot put on May 14 at the Princeton Elite Invitational and is set to compete at the 2022 NCAA Division III National Championships at the SPIRE Institute in Geneva, Ohio, on Friday, May 27 at 11:30 a.m. to finish out his career.

Mastro also played football for the Greyhounds for four seasons with 134 tackles including 19 and a half tackles for loss, six and a half sacks, four pass break-ups, three forced fumbles and a blocked kick in 27 games.

Outside of the throws and football gridiron, Mastro made Moravian’s Dean’s Honors List five times and he was selected as the 2021 Landmark Conference Men’s Indoor Track & Field Senior Scholar-Athlete. He is a member of the Chi Alpha Sigma National College Athlete Honor Society, Mastro will be an eight-time member of the Landmark Conference Academic Honor Roll. Mastro completed his Master’s in Business Administration earlier this month with a 3.86 GPA, and he graduated in 2021 with an undergraduate degree in sports management with a 3.47 GPA.

Houghton runs distance events for both the cross country and track & field squads for the Greyhounds. Last fall, he crossed the finish line with the best time of his career for 8,000 meters, posting a time of 25:33.0 to place 204th of 289 runners at the 2021 NCAA Division III National Championships in Louisville, Kentucky. Houghton garnered All-Region honors after finishing sixth in the NCAA Division III Metro Regional. This past February, he was third in the 3,000-meter run, which was better than the previous best in the Landmark Indoor Championships. At the 2022 Landmark Conference Outdoor meet, he earned Landmark All-Conference Second Team honors in the 3,000-meter steeplechase.

Off the track and cross country course, Houghton has maintained a 3.81 GPA as a computer science major with a minor in mathematics. He has been on Moravian’s Dean’s Honors List seven times in his career, and Houghton is also a member of the Chi Alpha Sigma National College Athlete Honor Society and has been honored on the Landmark Conference Academic Honor Roll six times. He was selected as Moravian’s 2022 Blue & Grey Senior Scholar-Athlete.
