Moravian Splits on Opening Day of 17th Annual Greyhound Premiere Invitational

BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- The Moravian College women's volleyball squad splits its two matches on the opening day the 17th Annual Greyhound Premiere Invitational in Johnston Hall Friday, defeating Penn State-Harrisburg, 3-2, and falling to Grove City College, 3-0.

In the opener for the Hounds, they would rally from a two-set deficit for the 3-2 victory. The Lions won the first two games 25-23 and 25-21, before the Blue and Grey responded to take the next three sets 25-17, 25-12 and 15-10. Sophomore middle blocker Jess Appleton led Moravian with 14 kills and five blocks while sophomore outside hitter Kirah Dreisbach added 11 kills and 12 digs. Sophomore middle blocker Renee Mapa had nine kills and three blocks while junior right side hitter Emerson Gieryic, freshman outside hitter/defensive specialist Gabby Mancini and freshman setter Taylor Morley all had four kills. Gieryic also had three blocks while Mancini contributed 11 digs and Morley added 17 assists and nine digs. Gieryic and senior defensive specialist Alexis Szaro each had two service aces with Szaro adding a team-high 19 digs and senior setter Victoria Kauffman contributing 21 assists.

In the night cap of the tournament, the Hounds fell to the Wolverines, 25-21, 25-16, 25-21. Appleton paced the Blue and Grey with 17 kills while Mapa contributed eight kills and a pair of blocks in the contest. Dreisbach added seven kills and six digs for the Greyhounds while sophomore outside hitter Sela Herber had four kills. Morley paced the offense with 21 assists to go with five digs while Kauffman added 10 digs. Mancini had a team-high 11 digs while Szaro contributed five digs.

Moravian will be back on the court in the second day of the 17th Annual Greyhound Premiere Invitational on Saturday, August 30 when the squad plays Misericordia University at 1:00 p.m. and Alvernia University at 3:00 p.m. in Johnston Hall.
