Moravian Splits Tri-Match at Merchant Marine Academy

KINGS POINT, N.Y. --- The Moravian College women's volleyball team split a tri-match at The United States Merchant Marine Academy Saturday, defeating Rutgers-Newark 3-1 before falling to the host Mariners, 3-0.

The Greyhounds opened the day with set scores of 25-11, 17-25, 25-22, 25-18 in the win over Rutgers-Newark, the fifth straight triumph by the Blue and Grey. Sophomore middle blocker Jess Appleton led Moravian with 13 kills while sophomore middle blocker Renee Mapa had 12 kills. Sophomore outside hitter Sela Herber contributed 10 kills, 15 dig and five service aces for the Blue and Grey while sophomore outside hitter Kirah Dreisbach had 18 digs, seven kills, three service aces and three assists. Senior setter Victoria Kauffman ran the offense with 30 assists to go with 12 digs, three kills and three service aces while junior right side hitter Emerson Gieryic added five kills and three digs. Senior defensive specialist Alexis Szaro contributed eight digs while sophomore defensive specialist Ally Locy and freshman setter Natalia Matos each had seven digs. Freshman defensive specialist Gabby Mancini added five digs.

The Hounds saw their winning streak snapped by USMMA with set scores of 25-21, 25-22, 25-19. Mapa and Appleton each had a team-high seven kills. Herber and Dreisbach both added six kills with Herber contributing seven digs and a pair of service aces and Dreisbach recording five digs. Kauffman contributed another 23 assists to go with six digs and two kills while Matos had a team high eight digs. Mancini had seven digs while Szaro added five digs.

Moravian is scheduled to return to action on Tuesday, October 1 when the squad hosts Lancaster Bible College in a non-conference match beginning at 7:00 p.m. in Johnston Hall.
