Greyhounds Open 2019 Landmark Conference Season with Split at Elizabethtown

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- The Moravian College volleyball team split its opening day of Landmark Conference competition, falling to host Elizabethtown College, 3-1, and defeating Goucher College, 3-1, Saturday.

The Greyhounds opened conference play with a 25-20, 22-25, 25-17, 25-14 set back to the Blue Jays. Sophomore middle blocker Jess Appleton paced the squad with 10 kills and a pair of blocks while sophomore outside hitter Sela Herber added nine kills and 11 digs. Sophomore outside hitter Kirah Dreisbach contributed seven kills and 11 digs while freshman setter Taylor Morley paced the offense with 24 assists to go with 12 digs and two kills. Sophomore middle blocker Renee Mapa recorded six blocks with two kills while senior setter Victoria Kauffman, junior right side hitter Emerson Gieryic and freshman right side hitter Maddie Houchens all had two kills with Kauffman adding six assists. Freshman defensive specialist Gabby Mancini had 13 digs and four service aces in the contest while freshman setter Natalia Matos added 10 digs and a pair of service aces and freshman defensive specialist Gabby Mineo had eight digs.

The Hounds dropped the opening set to Goucher, 25-23, before taking the next three 25-21, 26-24, 25-19 to capture the victory. Herber led the Blue and Grey with 14 kills to go with 13 digs and two service aces while Dreisbach added 11 kills and 26 digs. Appleton posted seven kills, five blocks and three digs while Mapa contributed six kills. Morley ran the offense again with 32 assists, and she added 11 digs and three kills while Gieryic and Houchens both had two kills. Mancini contributed four service aces while Mineo had eight digs and a pair of service aces and Matos added eight digs.

Moravian is slated to return to action on Wednesday, October 9 when the squad heads to Susquehanna University for a Landmark Conference match beginning at 7:00 p.m.
