Spirk & Hagerty Honored as Landmark Conference Men's Track & Field Athletes of the Week

TOWSON, Md. --- Moravian College sophomore hurdler John Spirk and senior jumper Kyle Hagerty have been honored as the Landmark Conference Men's Indoor Track and Field Athletes of the Week for their performances last Saturday.

The duo helped the Greyhounds return to action at the Susquehanna University Orange & Maroon Invitational after a six-week break.

Spirk captured the 60-meter hurdles in an ECAC qualifying time of 8.66 seconds, and he had the fastest qualifying mark of 8.79 seconds. He also ran the leadoff leg on Moravian's 4x400-meter relay team that placed fifth in 3:34.50.

"We knew Saturday would be a big opportunity for John to go against one of the best hurdlers in the conference," commented Head Coach Jesse Baumann. "John wound up having a pair of really good hurdle races and is already within a tenth of a second of where he left off back in December even after the winter layoff where we obviously couldn't work on his technique as much. It was a great early season test for him, and he should be able to build on that for the rest of this season."

Hagerty won the long jump with an ECAC qualifying leap of 6.73 meters (22-1.5) on his second jump of the competition. Hagerty also ran a time of 24.59 seconds in the 200-meter dash to place 24th in the race.

"Kyle has worked as hard as anyone on the team and things just haven't progressed as quickly as he'd like due to some hamstring injuries and other reasons since he jumped 22'1" a few seasons ago," stated Baumann. "On Saturday he not only managed to jump the farthest he has in his life, but his series was consistent and shows he can reproduce that 6.74m jump. He's stayed positive despite setbacks and we couldn't be happier to see him get back to the level we all knew he was capable of."

Moravian is slated to return to action on Saturday, January 28 at the Lehigh University Covert Classic in Bethlehem.
