No. 19 Moravian Sweeps Juniata at Blue & Grey Field to Begin 2021 Landmark Conference Season

BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- The No. 19 Moravian College softball team swept Juniata College, 2-1 and 5-3, to begin the 2021 Landmark Conference season at Blue & Grey Field Saturday afternoon. 

How It Happened – Game 1

  • The Greyhounds took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning when senior second baseman Shannon Brogan reached on a fielder's choice and scored on an error
  • Moravian extended its lead to 2-0 in the bottom of the fifth when sophomore shortstop Alexis Agrapides singled to lead off the frame and raced home on an RBI double from senior catcher Brooke Wehr
  • Juniata cut the lead in half with a run in the top of the sixth inning before junior pitcher Alexandria Scheeler set down the Eagles in order in the seventh to end the game 

How It Happened – Game 2

  • Juniata would take a 1-0 lead on a solo home run in the top of the second inning in the nightcap
  • The Greyhounds responded with four runs in the home half of the third inning to move ahead 4-1. Senior left fielder Maura Kane led off with a single and scored on an RBI single from Agrapides. Junior center fielder Cameron Cassidy added an RBI double while Wehr connected on a two-RBI triple for the Hounds
  • The Eagles connected on another home run in the top of the fourth, this time a two-run homer to cut the Moravian lead to 4-3
  • The Blue and Grey finished off the scoring in the bottom of the fifth when Wehr ripped an RBI single

First for the Hounds

  • Sophomore pitcher Madison Hummel tossed her first complete game of the season in the second game with four strikeouts and no walks as she improved to 3-0 in the circle

Inside the Numbers

  • Moravian had 13 hits on the afternoon with Wehr going 3-for-6 with four RBIs. Agrapides, Cassidy and Scheeler each also had two hits in the doubleheader
  • Wehr's final hit of the day was the 130th of her career as she became the 26th Greyhound to reach that number of hits. Wehr is also now just 10 RBIs away from 100 in her career
