No. 9 Moravian Improves to 20-0 with Sweep of Drew in Landmark Conference Action

BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- The No. 9 Moravian College softball team swept its tenth straight doubleheader of the 2021 season, defeating visiting Drew University, 4-1 and 6-3, in a pair of quick Landmark Conference contests at Blue & Grey Field Wednesday afternoon.

How It Happened – Game #1

  • The Rangers scored the opening run in the first contest in the top of the fourth inning
  • The Greyhounds answered right back with three runs in the bottom of the fourth to go on top, 3-1. After getting a pair of runners on base by errors, senior second baseman Shannon Brogan connected on an RBI sacrifice fly to knot the score at 1-1. Senior left fielder Maura Kane put the Blue & Grey in front for good with a two-RBI triple down the right field line
  • Moravian added a run in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI double from senior catcher Brooke Wehr
  • Sophomore Madison Hummel improved to 9-0 in the circle this spring as she recorded three strikeouts in her complete game win 

How It Happened – Game #2

  • The Greyhounds jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning in the nightcap. Wehr drove in the first run with an RBI triple down the right field line, and she raced home on an RBI single from freshman designated player Emily Silberman. Junior first baseman Alexandria Scheeler added an RBI single in the inning while the final run scored on an error
  • The Rangers would make it a game with three runs in the top of the third inning to cut the Moravian edge to 4-3
  • The Greyhounds plated a run in the bottom of the fifth inning when Scheeler singled and eventually slide across the plate on a wild pitch
  • The Blue & Grey made their edge 6-3 with another run in the sixth inning when Silberman grounded into an RBI fielder's choice
  • Senior Meghan Bauer picked up her sixth win of the year in the circle, and she also had five strikeouts

Inside the Numbers

  • Moravian had 15 hits on the afternoon but just five hits in the opener
  • Sophomore shortstop Alexis Agrapides was 4-for-7 on the day with three runs and a double while Wehr was 3-for-5 with two RBIs, two runs, a double and a triple. Brogan went 3-for-6 while Scheeler had two hits
  • The first game took just an hour and 12 minutes to play, and the second contest was just 10 minutes longer
