No. 4 Moravian Forces If Necessary Game with Scranton in 2021 Landmark Conference Championship Series

BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- The top seed and No. 4 ranked Moravian College softball team saw its program record 32-game winning streak come to an end with a 10-6 loss to second seed The University of Scranton in the opening contest of the 2021 Landmark Conference Championship series at Blue & Grey Field Saturday before taking game two, 6-4, to take a winner-take-all game on Sunday, May 16 for the conference title and an automatic berth to the NCAA Division III Tournament. 

How It Happened – Game #1

  • The Royals jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning
  • Moravian answered with a run in the bottom of the first when senior catcher Brooke Wehr connected on a solo home run, her fifth homer of the season and the 27th of her career
  • The Greyhounds then scored three runs in the bottom of the second to take a 4-3 lead. Senior outfielder Maura Kane connected on an RBI triple while junior outfielder Cameron Cassidy had an RBI double. Senior second baseman Shannon Brogran added an RBI single
  • Scranton scored twice in the third inning to move ahead 5-4, and the Royals plated two more runs in the top of the fourth to extend the edge to 7-4
  • The Blue & Grey would get a run back in the bottom of the fourth when freshman designated player Emily Silberman connected on a solo home run, her second homer of the year
  • The Royals added three runs in the top of the fifth frame for a 10-5 advantage
  • Moravian scored once in the bottom of the seventh on an error to score the final run of the game
  • Sophomore Madison Hummel took her first loss of the year in the circle, and she had one strikeout in two innings. Junior Alexandria Scheeler had two strikeouts in two innings of action while senior Meghan Bauer recorded two strikeouts in three innings.

How It Happened – Game #2

  • The Greyhounds took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on a two-RBI single from Scheeler
  • Scranton cut the lead in half with a run in the top of the second
  • Moravian plated four runs in the bottom of the fourth frame for a 6-1 edge. The first two runs of the inning scored on errors before Wehr hit a two-RBI single
  • The Royals scored twice in the fifth inning and once in the sixth to finish off the scoring on the game
  • Hummel earned her 14th win in the circle with three strikeouts in six innings of work while Bauer earned her first save of the season and fifth of her career with one strikeout in one inning

Inside the Numbers

  • Moravian had 17 hits in the two games with Cassidy going 4-for-6 with two runs and an RBI while Brogan was 3-for-7. Wehr, Silberman and Kane each had two hits
