No. 10 Greyhounds Sweep Scranton Again to Take Control of Landmark Conference Standings

BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- The No. 10 Moravian College softball team earned its seventh straight doubleheader sweep and improved to 14-0 overall and 10-0 in Landmark Conference action as the Greyhounds defeated visiting The University of Scranton, 8-6 and 7-0, at Blue & Grey Field Thursday afternoon.

How It Happened – Game #1

  • The Greyhounds jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning. Senior second baseman Shannon Brogan got the Blue and Grey on the scoreboard with an infield RBI single while an error allowed the second run to score. Senior outfielder Maura Kane followed with a two-RBI double while sophomore shortstop Alexis Agrapides had an RBI double to finish off the inning
  • The Royals answered with three runs in the top of the fourth inning, and Scranton scored three more times in the top of the fifth to take a 6-5 lead
  • Moravian would counter with three runs in the bottom of the sixth to retake the lead at the final score of 8-6. With two runners on and no outs, senior catcher Brooke Wehr muscled a three-run homer to left field directly into the wind for her fourth home run of the season and the 26th of her career
  • Senior Meghan Bauer earned the win in relief in the circle, striking out four batters in three innings of work to improve to 3-0. Junior Alexandria Scheeler had the start in the circle for Moravian and also struck out four batters in four-plus innings of action 

How It Happened – Game #2

  • The Hounds scored the only two runs of the game they would need in the bottom of the first inning in the second contest. Agrapides led off with a triple and then beat the throw to the plate on an RBI ground out by junior outfielder Victoria Smith. Brogan added an RBI sacrifice fly to second base as Smith smartly raced home with the Scranton second baseman's momentum taking her into the outfield after the out
  • Moravian finished off the scoring with a five-run third inning. Junior outfielder Cameron Cassidy hit an RBI singles with the bases loaded for the first run of the frame before Agrapides connected on a grand slam into the wind in left field, her third homer of the season
  • Sophomore Madison Hummel tossed her second shutout of the season in the circle, scattering seven hits to go with five strikeouts and no walks

Inside the Numbers

  • Moravian had 23 hits in the doubleheader including 16 in the opener. Brogan was 4-for-6 with two RBIs and two runs while Cassidy was 4-for-7 with an RBI
  • Wehr was 3-for-6 with three RBIs, two runs and her homer while Agrapides went 3-for-8 with two runs, five RBIs, a triple and a homer. Smith posted a 3-for-7 day with two runs and an RBI while Kane had two hits and two RBIs
  • Freshman designated player Ajala Elmore had two hits and scored twice while Scheeler connected two hits
