No. 15 Moravian Rallies in Both Games to Sweep Catholic in Landmark Conference Action

BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- The No. 15 Moravian College softball squad came back from a 2-0 deficit for a 4-3 walk-off win in the opener, and then the Greyhounds rallied two down once again in the second game for a 5-4 victory as the Hounds swept visiting The Catholic University of America in Landmark Conference action at Blue & Grey Field Saturday.

How It Happened – Game #1

  • The Cardinals jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning in the opener
  • Moravian responded with two runs in the bottom of the second to knot the score at 2-2 when freshman infielder Ajala Elmore connected on a two-RBI single in her first collegiate at-bat after missing the first eight games of the season
  • Catholic retook the lead at 3-2 with a run in the top of the fifth inning
  • The Blue and Grey tied the contest again at 3-3 in the bottom of the sixth inning when senior third baseman Maddisen Bieber raced home on a throwing error by the Cardinals
  • Bieber would finish the game in the bottom of the seventh inning as the Greyhounds loaded the bases with one out before Bieber ripped an RBI single up the middle to score Elmore with the winning run
  • Sophomore Madison Hummel made the start in the circle and had two strikeouts before senior Meghan Bauer came in for the final two innings as she earned her first win of the season with one strikeout 

How It Happened – Game #2

  • Moravian took the lead first in the night cap as the Hound scored twice in the bottom of the fourth frame for a 2-0 lead with one run scoring on an error and Elmore adding an RBI double
  • Catholic would answer in the top of the sixth with four runs to build a 4-2 advantage
  • The Greyhounds came right back with three runs in the bottom half of the sixth to retake the lead. Elmore hit an RBI single with the bases loaded while senior left field Maura Kane had an RBI single to knot the score. Senior second baseman Shannon Brogan would race across the plate on a wild pitch to give Moravian the lead with what would be the winning run
  • Junior Alexandria Scheeler tossed the first 5.1 innings with two strikeouts before Bauer came in to record her second with of the afternoon with one strikeout in 1.2 innings of work

Inside the Numbers

  • Moravian had 19 hits in the two games with Elmore, Bieber and senior catcher Brooke Wehr each collecting three hits. Kane, junior outfielder Victoria Smith and sophomore shortstop Alexis Agrapides all had two hits
  • Kane registered a pair of assists from left field as she threw out a runner at the plate in each contest
  • Moravian played for the first time since a partial inning of a game versus Keystone College on March 23 that ended up being cancelled by COVID protocols. The Greyhounds last full game before Saturday was a doubleheader sweep of Juniata College on March 21
