GWYNEDD VALLEY, Pa. --- The Moravian College women's basketball team jumped out to an early 5-0 lead and went on to score a season-high 97 points in a 97-83 non-conference win at Gwynedd Mercy University Saturday.
The Greyhounds, now 4-1 on the season as Head Coach Mary Beth Spirk earned her 599th career victory, had three players in double figures and two post double-doubles in the contest. Senior forward Nadine Ewald had her fourth straight double-double and the 26th of her career as she had game-highs of 27 points and 14 rebounds to go with three assists and a pair of steals. Ewald became the ninth player in school history to reach 700 career rebounds, now with 710. Senior guard Karlie Brogan recorded her second career double-double with 21 points and 11 boards to go with four assist and two steals while senior guard Maddie Capuano tossed in 19 points to go along with eight assists and five rebounds.
Freshman forward Emily Markowski netted a career-high eight points for the Hounds to go with three rebounds while freshmen guards Jackie Kelly and Madison Amy each scored seven points with Amy adding five rebounds and three assists and Kelly grabbing three boards. Sophomore guard Kayla Yoegel contributed four points while senior guard Brooke Santy and junior forward Jordan Beneducci both had two points with Santy adding two rebounds. Freshman guard Morgan Amy contributed five assists and two rebounds in the game.
Capuano opened the game with a three-pointer and Yoegel added a jumper to make it 5-0. After the Griffins first basket of the game, Capuano drilled another three-pointer and Ewald hit a jumper to give the Blue and Grey a 10-3 edge. Gwynedd Mercy scored the next six points to get within 10-9 but the Greyhounds pulled away and led 25-16 after the first quarter as Ewald beat the clock with a short jumper.
Brogan started the second quarter with a lay-up that pushed Moravian's advantage into double figures for the first time, and the Hounds led by as many as 17 points during the period after two free throws from Beneducci at the 1:51 mark made it a 46-29 contest. The Blue and Grey carried a 48-34 lead into the locker room at the intermission.
The Griffins closed the gap to eight points, 50-42, just two minutes into the second half, but Moravian responded and had the lead at 20 points, 70-50, with 2:36 left in the third period. The Hounds headed to the final 10 minutes with a 71-53 edge. The Blue and Grey would keep the lead above 10 points for all but 28 seconds during the fourth quarter as the squad scored 97 points for the first time in just over four year after scoring 97 points in a 97-57 win at Immaculata University on November 19, 2015.
The Greyhounds are scheduled to return to action on Tuesday, November 26 in a non-conference game at DeSales University that will be televised live by TV-2 Sports. Tip-off is set for just after 6:00 p.m.
