HUNTINGDON, Pa. --- The Moravian College women's basketball team outscored host Juniata College, 20-4, during the second quarter to build a 22-point halftime lead to help the Greyhounds post a 76-52 Landmark Conference victory over the Eagles Saturday in Huntingdon.
The Hounds, now 9-6 overall and 2-2 in Landmark Conference play, had three players in double figures led by senior guard Maddie Capuano, who had 20 points to go with a team-high nine rebounds, four steals and three assists. Midway through the first half on a made free throw, Capuano became the eighth Greyhound in program history to reach 1,500 career points, now with 1,513 points in 94 games. Senior forward Nadine Ewald contributed 18 points, seven rebounds, five assists and five steals while freshman guard Madison Amy added 10 points. Ewald moved up to fourth in school history with 817 rebounds, and she is now tied for 21st with 1,098 points.
Senior guard Karlie Brogan and sophomore guard Kayla Yoegel each had six points with Brogan contributing five rebounds and a pair of steals while Yoegel had three boards. Freshman guard Morgan Amy tossed in five points with three rebounds and two assists while junior forward Jordan Beneducci had four points. Senior guard Brooke Santy added three points while freshman forward Emily Markowski and freshman guard Jackie Kelly each had two points. Sophomore guard Alix Buskirk dished out two assists.
Juniata scored the opening three-pointer of the game before Ewald sank two free throws to get the Blue and Grey on the scoreboard. The Greyhounds would take the lead for good at 6-5 on a lay-up from Brogan four minutes into the contest. Moravian pushed the lead into double digits at 18-8 on a pair of Capuano free throws with 1:18 left in the opening quarter, and the Hounds led 18-12 after 10 minutes of action.
The Greyhounds netted the first eight points of the second quarter to push the edge back into double digits, and when Capuano hit her milestone free throw at the 5:07 mark, Moravian lead 29-14. Morgan Amy hit a late jumper to send the Blue and Grey to the locker room with a 38-16 advantage.
Ewald hit a lay-up and Capuano added a three-pointer and a lay-up as the Greyhounds pushed their lead to 29 points, 45-16, to start the second half. The advantage reached 30 points twice in the third quarter while the Blue and Grey led 61-36 after 30 minutes of play. Moravian used its bench in the fourth quarter but the Eagles would only be able to get as close as 19 points in the final period.
The Hounds are slated to return to action on Wednesday, January 22 when the squad heads to Drew University for a Landmark Conference contest tipping off at 7:00 p.m. in Madison, New Jersey.
