SELINSGROVE, Pa. --- The Moravian College women's basketball squad dropped a 66-60 Landmark Conference decision at Susquehanna University Wednesday evening in the Greyhounds final road game of the 2019-20 regular season.
The Hounds, who are 14-10 overall and 7-6 in Landmark Conference action, head into the final game of the regular season still looking to clinch the program's 19th straight postseason appearance.
Moravian had three players in double figures Wednesday led by senior forward Nadine Ewald, who had her 14th double-double of the season and the 36th of her career with 24 points and 16 rebounds as she moved into 13th in school history with 1,239 points and is within six rebounds of becoming the third player in program history to 900 career rebounds. Senior guard Maddie Capuano tossed in 16 points to increase her career total to 1,671, and she added three rebounds and two steals while sophomore guard Kayla Yoegel added 10 points, two rebounds and a pair of blocked shots.
Senior guard Karlie Brogan netted five points to go with three steals and seven rebounds, which made her the 14th player in school history to reach 600 career rebounds, now with 604. Freshmen guard Madison Amy and Morgan Amy each scored two points with Morgan adding two rebounds and Madison dishing out two assists. Sophomore guard Alix Buskirk had one point while senior guard Brooke Santy grabbed a pair of rebounds.
The River Hawks hit the opening basket before a lay-up from Brogan and a jumper by Capuano had the Blue and Grey leading 4-3. Susquehanna netted six straight points to take a 9-4 lead. The Greyhounds answered with six straight points as another jumper from Capuano had Moravian back ahead 10-9 with 4:13 left in the first quarter. Another 6-0 run from the River Hawks gave them the lead for good, and Susquehanna had a 17-13 edge after 10 minutes of action.
Early in the second quarter, a free throw and a lay-up by Ewald had the Hounds down just three points, 19-16, before an 11-3 run by Susquehanna pushed the River hawks' edge into double digits. Morgan Amy hit a late lay-up as Moravian headed to the locker room down 30-21.
Ewald connected on two free throws to begin the second half, and she followed it up with a three-point play as the Greyhounds trailed by six at 32-26. The River Hawks answered with five points to push the advantage back into double digits, and Susquehanna lead 51-38 after 30 minutes of action.
The River Hawks pushed the advantage to 14 points early in the fourth quarter, leading 54-40. Moravian then went on an 11-0 run as a three-point play from Capuano has the Hounds down just 54-51 with 5:06 remaining on the clock. After Susquehanna push the edge back to nine points, a three-pointer from Brogan and a jumper by Ewald had the Greyhounds back within three points at 63-60 with 20 seconds to go. The River Hawks finished the contest with three free throws to set the final score.
Moravian is scheduled to close out the 2019-20 regular season on Saturday, February 22 when the squad hosts Elizabethtown College in a Landmark Conference contest beginning at 4:00 p.m. in Johnston Hall on Senior Day. With a win, the Greyhounds can clinch a postseason berth and move into a tie for third with the Blue Jays.
