SCRANTON, Pa. --- The Moravian College women's basketball team dropped a 64-57 decision at No. 16 The University of Scranton in Landmark Conference action Wednesday evening.
The Greyhounds, who are now 13-9 overall and 6-5 in Landmark Conference play, had two players in double figures let by senior guard Maddie Capuano, who netted a game-high 28 points to go with five rebounds, three assists and a pair of steals. Senior forward Nadine Ewald added 16 points, four rebounds and a blocked shot to become the eighth player in school history to reach 100 career blocked shots.
Freshman guard Madison Amy tossed in three points while senior guard Karlie Brogan grabbed a team-high seven rebounds to go with two points. Sophomore guard Kayla Yoegel and junior forward Jordan Beneducci each had four boards and two points with Yoegel adding two steals while freshman guard Madison Amy and senior guard Brooke Santy each had two points.
The Royals scored the first basket of the game but the Greyhounds took an early 6-5 lead on a lay-up by Capuano. After Scranton moved ahead by four points, Capuano hit a jumper with 3:22 to go to tie the contest at 12-12; however, the Blue and Grey did not score again in the quarter as the Royals led 18-12 after 10 minutes of action.
Scranton pushed its edge to eight points early in the second quarter before the Greyhounds fought back and pulled within a point at 22-21 on a three-point play by Capuano with 6:03 until the intermission. Once again, the Royals stretched the advantage out to five points before Moravian would retake the lead at 27-26 on two free throws from Ewald, who was 8-for-8 at the charity stripe in the contest. Capuano hit a jumper that had the Hounds leading 33-32 in the final minute of the first half but Scranton scored with four seconds left to head to the locker room with a 34-33 lead.
The third quarter saw the Royals quickly push the edge to six points, and Moravian would get no closer than three points in the period as Scranton held a 45-40 lead after 30 minutes of action. Early in the fourth quarter, Capuano drained a three-pointer and Ewald followed with a jumper as the Greyhounds got within two points at 49-47, but that would be as close as the Hounds would get the rest of the way.
Moravian is scheduled to return to action on Saturday, February 15 when the squad heads to Goucher College for a Landmark Conference game tipping off at 2:00 p.m. in Towson, Maryland.
