BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- The Moravian College women's basketball team outscored visiting The Catholic University 20-10 in the second quarter as the Greyhounds posted a 60-51 Landmark Conference victory over the Cardinals in Johnston Hall Saturday afternoon.
The Hounds, now 8-5 overall and 1-1 in Landmark Conference action, had two players in double figures led by senior guard Maddie Capuano, who netted 20 points to go along with five rebounds, two assists and a pair of steals. Senior forward Nadine Ewald picked up her tenth double-double of the season and the 32nd of her career with 14 rebounds and 13 points to go with four assists and a pair of blocked shots, and Ewald became the fifth player in school history to reach 800 career rebounds, now with 804 boards.
Sophomore guard Kayla Yoegel tossed in nine points to go with six rebounds and a pair of blocked shots while freshman guard Jackie Kelly added six points and five boards. Freshman guard Morgan Amy grabbed a career-high 12 rebounds to go along with five points and four assists while freshman guard Madison Amy had four points. Senior guard Karlie Brogan added four rebounds, three points and three assists for the Blue and Grey.
Catholic opened the scoring before Moravian took the lead for good at 5-4 on a three-pointer from Yoegel just over two and a half minutes into action. The Hounds pushed the advantage out to seven points, 15-8, on a three-pointer by Morgan Amy at the 4:22 mark before the Cardinals finished the quarter on a 6-1 run to cut the Greyhounds' lead to 16-14 after 10 minutes of action.
Kelly started the scoring in the second quarter with a pair of free throws, and she hit a three-pointer to give the Blue and Grey a 23-14 edge just over two minutes into the period. Catholic did close within four points at 28-24 with just over four minutes before the intermission but five points from Capuano, another free throw from Kelly and a lay-up by Ewald in the final 2:43 sent Moravian to the locker room with a 36-24 lead.
Ewald began the second half with two free throws and three points from Capuano pushed the edge to 41-24 before the Cardinals snapped a six-and-a-half-minute scoring drought. A lay-up from Brogan and a three-pointer from Madison Amy had the Greyhounds leading by 18 points, 46-28, their largest advantage of the contest, with five minutes left in the third quarter. The Cardinals would cut the Hounds' edge to 13 points, 48-35, after 30 minutes of play.
Nearly three minutes into the fourth quarter, a three-pointer by Capuano had Moravian leading 53-37; however, the Greyhounds went three and a half minutes without scoring as Catholic pulled within seven points with a 9-0 run. The closest the Cardinals would get was six points before Capuano drained two free throws with 36 seconds left and Madison Amy added another free throw with 29 seconds remaining to seal the victory.
The Hounds will close out their six-game homestand on Wednesday, January 15 when Moravian hosts No. 6 The University of Scranton in a Landmark Conference contest beginning at 7:00 p.m. in Johnston Hall.
