BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- The Moravian College women's basketball team used a 16-0 run during the second quarter to turn a tied game into a double-digit victory as the Greyhounds defeated visiting Goucher College, 53-34, in Landmark Conference action Saturday afternoon in Johnston Hall.
The Hounds, now 10-7 overall and 3-3 in Landmark Conference play, had just one player in double figures with senior forward Nadine Ewald recording her 12th double-double of the season and the 34th of her career with 17 points and 10 rebounds to go with three assists. Ewald moved into third in school history with 837 rebounds during the contest, and she is now 18th in program history with 1,133 points.
Freshman guard Jackie Kelly tossed in a career-high eight points to go with five rebounds while senior guard Maddie Capuano had seven points to move into a tie for sixth in school history with 1,529 points, and Capuano also added four rebounds, two assists and a pair of steals. Senior guard Karlie Brogan scored six points to go along with five steals and eight rebounds as she moved up to 16th in the record books with 563 career rebounds.
Senior guard Brooke Santy and freshman guard Madison Amy each scored four points with Amy adding two steals and two boards while freshman guard Morgan Amy had three points and four rebounds. Sophomore guard Alix Buskirk contributed four rebounds and two points while junior forwards Jordan Beneducci and Raquel Lopez de Boer each scored one point with Beneducci adding two assists and two steals. Sophomore guard Kayla Yoegel made four steals in the game.
Ewald scored the first basket of the game before the Gophers noted the score at 2-2. Brogan put the Hounds back in front, and a lay-up by Ewald had the Blue and Grey holding a 13-4 edge with 4:41 left in the first quarter. Goucher scored the final five points of the opening period as the Hounds had a 13-9 lead after 10 minutes of action.
Ewald sank a free throw for the first point of the second quarter before Goucher scored five straight to knot the game at 14-14 with 7:30 before the intermission. Ewald made another free throw 1:45 later to give Moravian the lead for good, and Ewald snapped the Hounds' nine-minute drought without a field goal at 5:08 when she scored on another lay-up. Leading by seven points, Kelly, Madison Amy and Capuano hit three straight three-pointers to give the Greyhounds a 30-14 lead with 39 seconds left in the half. Goucher snapped the run with a buzzer beater to send the teams to the locker room with the Blue and Grey leading 30-16.
Moravian maintained its lead throughout the third quarter, pushing it back to 16 points at 35-19 on an Ewald lay-up midway through the period. The Gophers would close within nine points but a late basket by Capuano had the Greyhounds up 39-27 after 30 minutes of action. The lead reached a game-high 22 points at 52-30 after Beneducci sank a free throw with just over three minutes remaining in the contest.
The Greyhounds are slated to return to the court on Wednesday, January 29 when the squad hosts Susquehanna University in a Landmark Conference game beginning at 7:00 p.m. in Johnston Hall.
